Seven boardrider clubs from across Western Australia are preparing to do battle along Perth’s metropolitan beaches this weekend, as the third event of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB) prepares to touch down in WA.
Now in its eighth season, the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle is the country’s biggest grassroots clubs event, involving more than 60 of Australia’s best boardrider clubs and boasting a total prize pool of over $100,000.
After events in QLD and NSW, competition will be fierce and rivalries will intensify as WA clubs duel it out for $3,000 in prize money and two guaranteed spot into the National Final.
Clubs will nominate a team of 5x surfers – 2x Open Males, 1x Open Female, 1x Over-35 Master (male or female) and 1x Under-18 junior (male or female), who will compete in an exciting and dynamic format.
Clubs will need to display their depth of talent and understand the tactics and strategies needed to maximise their scoring opportunity.
Defending event champions Margaret River Boardriders, have won five of the seven ABB events held thus far and will spearhead an impressive field of clubs competing, with a great mix of regional and metropolitan clubs set to participate.
“We’re stoked to be heading up to Perth this weekend to defend our title,” said Margaret River Club President Jerome Forrest. “Boardriding clubs and events like this are so important to the ongoing success of our sport. Clubs are the foundation where it all grows from and it is where juniors and opens come together and compete alongside one another, which is incredible.”
Margaret River will be challenged by Yallingup, Surf Beach, Cowaramup Bay, Scarborough, Trigg Point and Trigg Junior Boardriders’ when competition gets underway on Sunday.
“These events are edge of your seat entertainment, with plenty of excitement and a lot hanging on each and every wave ridden,” said Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks. “Surfing is typically an individual sport so when you have the chance to compete as part of a team it creates this wave of support and camaraderie that is hard to replace.”
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle will kick off on Sunday morning from approximately 8am with finals concluding by the early afternoon. A building swell and fresh winds are set to stir up the metro beaches and provide a challenge for each and every surfer that hits the water.
