TriggPoint Boardriders Club have claimed victory at the 28th Surf Boardroom Surf League proudly presented by Rip Curl, taking down five of WA’s best boarding clubs at the longest running and most prestigious inter-club surfing tournament in Western Australia.
The win at Surf League is the Trigg Point’s first since 2013, defeating down Margaret River, Yallingup and Scarborough Beach in an enthralling final, which saw many of WA’s best surfers repressing their local boardriding clubs with great vigour.
Fresh off their recent success at the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB), Trigg Point’s combination of Pascal Hutchinson, Mick Jardine, Nick Muntz, Jack Mickle, Jake Edwards and Fletcher Llanwarne was too good when it mattered, mastering the conditions to come out on top of one of WA’s time honoured and respected events.
First run back in 1986, Surf League has become a right of passage for many WA’s best surfers, with a total of six metropolitan and regional clubs going head-to-head for their share of more than $5k in cash and prizes up for grabs in 2020.
After an exciting and entertaining day of surfing, it was Trigg Point that took top honours with a dominant display of surfing in the wind affected, but highly contestable 2-3 feet peaks on offer at Scarborough Beach.
Despite a strong start from Margaret River, Trigg Point finished on a combined total of 75.80 to defeat first longtime rivals, Margaret River (74.44), Yallingup (64.09) and Scarborough (61.77), who finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Building on the momentum of each surfer that hit the water, Trigg Point were able to extract the most of the conditions on offer, taking the win from their more fancied opponents.
“I’m so stoked with how the team performed out there today,” said Trigg Point Captain Mick Jardine. “I’ve been competing for Trigg Point at this event for close to two decades now and the feeling only gets better. Well done to all the other team and of course Wayne and Geoff from the Boardroom for their ongoing support of this epic event.”
Margaret River’s Jacob Willcox was awarded the Perry Hatchett Medal, an honour reserved for the best individual surfer in the Surf League final. Willcox’s powerful and committed forehand and backhand surfing saw him post two big numbers to help his club finish in a very close second place behind Trigg Point.
Yallingup Boardriders were highly competitive in third and Scarborough Boardriders rounded our the top four, benefiting from the home ground advantage of their local beach.
Surfing Western Australia’s Events Manager Justin Majeks was thrilled with Surf League’s ongoing success and was excited to see the depth of WA talent on display.
