Surfing Western Australia held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and 2020 State Champion presentations over the weekend at the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club.
Despite the challenges faced this year, clearly there has also been a lot to celebrate. A total of 51 State Champions were recognised, as Surfing WA paid tribute to the effort, dedication and talent of our Junior Shortboard, Open Shortboard, Longboard, Logger, Bodyboard and SUP State Champions.
The event attracted many of WA’s past, present and emerging surfing stars, as the top performers across all codes and divisions were celebrated for their efforts in 2020. To be crowned State Champion is something all WA surfers should all be very proud of, etching their name alongside many legends of our sport.
“It was great to see all of our 2020 Champions in the same room with plenty of support from family and friends,” said Surfing WA CEO Mark Lane. “We understand the level of commitment and support it takes to be crowned a State Champion, so we congratulate you all on this fantastic achievement.”
Surfing WA also announced the Western Australian Surfer of the Year Award recipients based off their performances in 2019.
Named in the honour of four of Western Australia’s finest surfers – Ian Cairns, Jodie Cooper, Murray Smith and Mike McAuliffe, the Western Australian Surfers of the Year Awards are the annual recognition of outstanding performances by West Australian surfers in professional and amateur events over a calendar year.
Congratulations to Margaret River’s Jack Robinson for claiming his first ever Ian Cairns Male Surfer of the Year Award after qualifying for the World Surf League’s elite Championship Tour, where we all look forward to seeing him dominate.
Gracetown’s Bronte Macaulay claimed another Jodie Cooper Female Surfer of the Year Award, after finishing the 2019 WSL Championship Tour rated #12. A quarter final finish (5th place) in Bali was Macaulay’s best result for the year.
Red Bluff’s Coral Durant was announced as the Murray Smith Junior Surfer of the Year, after claiming the Under-18 Junior Girls National Title at last year’s Australian Junior Titles held in Margaret River. Durant was WA’s lone individual National Title winner at the event.
While, Margaret River’s Felicity Palmateer was awarded the Mike McAuliffe Performance Award for her second-place finish at the WSL Big Wave World Championships held in 30-40 feet waves at Jaws in Hawaii.
