THE 2022 SUNSMART BODYBOARD STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS HEADS TO CLAYTON’S BEACH THIS WEEKEND

Competitors are preparing to battle the elements, with some wet and windy conditions forecast for this weekend’s SunSmart WA Bodyboard State Championships presented by Good Earth, which is set to run at Clayton’s Beach in Mindarie.

Some of WA’s newest and most experienced bodyboarders will line up along Perth’s northern beaches in hopes of travelling to Port Macquarie in NSW for the National Bodyboard Titles in August.

Clayton’s Beach adjacent to the Mindarie Marina has become a mecca for metropolitan bodyboarders over the years, with the area producing plenty of quality waves and talented riders, none more so than Ocean Reef’s Lewy Finnegan who is arguably one of Australia’s brightest bodyboard talents.

Finnegan grew up bodyboarding at Clayton’s Beach and developed his skills to a world class level, thanks to the power and push of the wedging waves the location produces.

“The angle that the wedge rebounds off the break wall is so perfect that it moves the whole way down the beach, not just providing one A-frame, but sometimes up to 4 different peaks all the way down the beach because of the seemingly never-ending push of the wedge,” Finnegan said.

With seven separate divisions on offer for both men and women, it’s going to be electrifying weekend of high-performance bodyboarding in Mindarie, with competitors travelling from as far away as Albany to compete.

Reigning Open Men’s State Champion Josh De Legh (North Beach) will spearhead a fierce local contingent of metro riders to who’ll be out for success, including local siblings Ebony and Riley Schell (Mindarie), as well as Trigg’s Joel Hughan.

Surfing WA officials will be looking to pick the eyes out of the conditions, with Saturday looking like the best day of the weekend, with moderate northerly winds and a building swell set to bring out the best from the bodyboarders out West.

The 2022 SunSmart Bodyboard State Championships offers competitors a chance to compete in a safe, fun and friendly environment, whilst providing a pathway to the National Titles, where the best riders in the country are set to converge.
