The eighth stop of the 2022 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps is preparing to bounce down along Perth’s metropolitan beaches this weekend, with WA’s newest generation of mini-frothers set to compete at Trigg Beach.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps are a fun and friendly introduction to surf competition, as well as crucial part of the national development pathway, with grommets from across WA set to line up in this nationwide series which kicked off in New South Wales back in September.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps is the only Australian event series catering for the increasing number of the country’s ‘micro-groms’, with boys and girls preparing to compete in Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 divisions.
Under-14 State Champions Olive Hardy (Margaret River) and Ace Flynn (Cowaramup) will headline the blue-ribbon Under 14 Girls and Boys divisions respectively. While many other surfers will be pulling on a competition rash vest and for the very first time.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under’ divisions will each receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, 2 days of competition and event coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).
80 of WA’s brightest young surfing stars will compete this weekend, with an impressive group of talent all vying for their chance to head away to the Surfing Australia HPC.
“The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps are great for our emerging group of young West Aussie surfers,” said Surfing WA’s Events Manager Justin Majeks. “The unique format focuses fun and excitement, with every grom getting at least two surfs before facing elimination. The event provides a thrilling mix of bona fide rippers and well as kids who are just getting a taste for competition surfing.”
Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series will see events held in South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania.
A result at this event will contribute to a competitor’s overall National Junior Ranking. Each division of the 2022 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps has been added to the Surfing Australia National Junior Rankings with each event rated at 4500 points for first place with points descending respectively.
Surfing WA will be streaming live scores and results via www.liveheats.com.
