The Esperance-Goldfields Aboriginal Surfing and Leadership Program has wrapped up after four inspiring weeks, providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from the Stars and Clontarf Programs at Esperance Senior High School with a unique opportunity to connect with culture, community, and the ocean.
The program kicked off on February 8 with a special Welcome to Country by local Elder Annie Dabb from Dabungool Cultural Experiences, acknowledging students who are away from their own country. Annie shared the deep cultural history of the Kepa Kurl (Esperance) region, while former professional surfer Ken Dann, one of the few Indigenous surfers to represent Australia, spoke about his journey in the sport. With guidance from Ken and local surf instructor Brent Moss, students learned ocean awareness, safety, and fundamental surfing skills before hitting the waves.
Beyond the water, students engaged in cultural experiences, including a bush walk with Annie Dabb, who taught them about Wadjarri history and the significance of local bush tucker. As their confidence grew, so did their enthusiasm, with some students eager to continue surfing beyond the program.
“As the weeks progressed, it was evident and amazing to see how much participants had grown in confidence and self-esteem while developing their skills,” said Esperance Residential College Indigenous Coordinator Jacinta Johnston.
“Two students loved the program so much that they purchased their own surfboards and are eager to continue their love for surfing, despite not having surfed before.”
The program culminated in a Surfers Rescue 365 course, covering CPR, ocean safety, and board rescue techniques. Participants received certificates, followed by a celebratory barbecue lunch at the Esperance Goldfields Surf Life Saving Club, supported by Rusty and local sponsors.
The program received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, volunteers, and the community, reinforcing its role in fostering ocean safety, cultural awareness, healthy living, and personal growth.
Special thanks to Southern Ports, the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries, Woolworths Esperance, Reds Bakery, and Rusty for making this initiative possible.
