WA’s Most Experienced Surfers Set For Surf Masters Showdown In Margaret River

Published on 18/03/2026

MARGARET RIVER, WA/AUS (Monday 16 March 2026) – Western Australia’s most experienced and dedicated surfers will converge on the Margaret River coastline this weekend when the 2026 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships presented by SafeStyle returns to Gas Bay from Friday 20 – Saturday 21 March.

The annual event brings together surfers from across Western Australia, with competitors travelling from as far north as Geraldton to as far south as Albany to compete across 11 divisions from Under-21 through to Over-65.

For many competitors, the stakes go beyond state titles, with strong results offering qualification opportunities for the 2026 Australian Surf Championships, set to be held in Wollongong, NSW from August 24–30.

The Surf Masters pathway also continues to support Surfing WA’s “Pathway to the Pro” initiative, providing a competitive platform that allows emerging surfers to test themselves against experienced competitors while continuing their progression through state, national and professional ranks.

Reigning champions Okie Fraser (Margaret River) and Ruby Berry (Margaret River) will look to defend their Open Men’s and Open Women’s titles after impressive victories in last year’s event.

Surfing WA Events Manager Kim Clift said the Surf Masters Championships remain one of the most exciting events on the state calendar.

“The Surf Masters is always a great event. You get such a mix of surfers, from younger guys coming through to people who’ve been around the WA surf scene for years,” Clift said.

“It’s a good reflection of how strong surfing is in WA. You’ve got past champions, local crew and up-and-comers all in the water together, especially when the waves are good.”

Margaret River has long been a proving ground for Western Australian surfers, and Gas Bay is expected to deliver an exciting arena for competition once again.

With divisions spanning generations of surfers and a strong field expected across all categories, the event highlights both the longevity and passion that continues to drive WA’s surfing culture.

Competition is scheduled to begin Friday morning, with finals expected to run Saturday afternoon. The forecast for the weekend looks promising, with plenty of contestable surf, setting the stage for two days of high-performance competition.

The 2026 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships presented by SafeStyle is proudly supported by Think Mental Health, Healthway, the Road Safety Commission, Melville Toyota, Rockingham Toyota, Club Med, Creatures of Leisure, We Are Feel Good Inc., and Minuteman Press Perth.
