The Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles continued today in clean one-to-two foot surf at Cape Woolamai as semifinalists were decided in all U16 and U14 age divisions.
Grace Gosby (NSW) put on a dominating performance, posting the highest single wave score of 8.25 in U16 Women to win her heat.
“I was going for the rights at the start. But then I planned that if I didn’t have priority I’d shift over to the left and I got lucky and got that good one. I did two turns and it felt pretty good. I was pretty happy with it.”
Also progressing through to the semis were Meika Locke (QLD), Samantha Arderne (QLD), Ziggy Mackenzie (QLD), Olive Hardy (WA) and Ava Arghryros (NSW).
In U16 Men, Maverick Wilson (WA) faced pressure to score but managed a 7.90 ride in the last 90 seconds, going from third to first and securing his spot in the semis.
“I wasn’t really sure what I needed. I sort of just blocked it all out and went surfing. I’ve competed in the Titles for three years. This year is the first time I’m properly in tune and ready to take a win. One of my goals is to go to the ISA World Juniors and this is one of the comps to get there.”
Other surfers advancing in U16 men included Jesse Fergusson (QLD, Ben Zannatta(NSW), Mitchell Peterson (QLD), Okie Fraser (WA) and Max Mcgillavray (NSW).
Luca Martin (QLD) posted the highest heat total in U14 Boys, winning his heat. LocanaCullen (NSW) and Cruz Uros (WA) also won their heats. While in U14 Girls LaniCairncross (NSW) and Savannah Rielly (QLD) stood out. Eliza Richardson (QLD) also won her heat.
Contest Director, Liam Robertson said: We saw some great surfing today as we moved towards the finals of the event. We are looking at crowning the schools champions tomorrow with a small swell on the horizon for the final two days of competition.”
