CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT 48TH SUNSHINE SURF MASTERS

WA’s longest-running surfing event, the 48th Sunshine Surf Masters, presented by Mitchell & Brown Retravision, featured an impressive line-up of local talent last weekend.

Despite strong southerly winds, over 80 surfers flocked to Flat Rocks in Geraldton, where waves reached the 3 to 4-foot range. The competition was fierce, particularly in the Open Men’s division.

Geraldton Boardrider Club President Nic Chadbourne described the thrilling Open Men’s final: “Jake Hagan got off to a strong start, battling with Maverick Wilson for the lead. Luke Campbell was chasing a score over 8, and in the last minute, he got a cracking right-hander, and just belted it half a dozen times all the way to the beach and he got the score. It was a great comeback!”

In the Open Women’s division, local surfer Edel Rodden emerged victorious. “Edel had a great final,” said Nic. “She caught an early wave that set her apart, and no one could match it. Rosie Gillet was impressive throughout the weekend, but Edel’s early score secured her the title.”

As winners of the Open Men’s and Women’s divisions, both Luke and Edel have received wild cards into next year’s Margaret River Pro Trials event.

Another highlight of the event was the Over 60’s ‘Sam’s Division,’ honouring local surfer Sam Salmond. Steve Williams from Scarborough claimed victory for the second consecutive year.

The Expression Session also delivered, with Maverick Wilson stealing the show. He scored a perfect 10 with a series of big turns and an impressive Air Reverse, earning the title for the best wave of the competition.
