MARGARET RIVER WA/AUS (Monday 23rd March 2026), Margaret River delivered across both days as the 2026 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships, presented by Safestyle, wrapped up in quality surf at Gas Bay.
Gas Bay turned on highly contestable conditions across the weekend, providing the perfect arena for competition. Day one featured a clean 3–4ft swell with light southerly winds, offering tubes, rippable walls and exciting aerial sections. Overnight, the swell built significantly, with day two delivering powerful 6–8ft surf, with early barrels giving way to open faces ideal for turns and progressive aerial surfing later in the day.
A consistent run of swell lit up the iconic reef break, with competitors rising to the occasion, threading deep tubes, laying down high-quality turns and launching clean airs across both days of competition.
Surfing WA Contest Director Pete Carrol said the event showcased both the quality of the conditions and the depth of talent across the state.
“The level of surfing across the weekend was outstanding, and Gas Bay really delivered,” Carrol said. “From clean, hollow waves on day one to bigger, more powerful surf on day two, it gave surfers every opportunity to perform. The depth of talent across all divisions, from our experienced masters to the next generation coming through, was impressive to see.”
No one seized their opportunities better than Macklin Flynn (Cowaramup), setting the tone early with a signature huge air to post the event’s first 9.00 (from a possible 10). He carried that momentum through to the final, finishing with a combined total of 13.84 (from a possible 20).
Flynn’s standout performance not only secured his first Open Men’s state title but also earned him a coveted spot in the WA Trials, where he will compete for a wildcard entry into the World Surf League Margaret River Pro this April.
Olive Hardy (Margaret River) delivered a composed and confident performance to claim victory in the Open Women’s final, posting a combined total of 12.00 (from a possible 20). The reigning Under-18 Girls state champion showcased her potential with committed turns and smart wave selection, marking her as one to watch.
Hardy will also line up in the WA Trials, following in the footsteps of her older sister Willow Hardy, who claimed the event in 2025.
Adding to the strong showing from the Hardy family, Willow Hardy earned the women’s Wave of the Weekend honours for a powerful bottom-turn to top-turn combination on a critical section, followed by another high-performance manoeuvre that scored a 9.27.
The Pro Junior Women’s division emerged as one of the highlights of the event, with Ruby Berry (Margaret River) claiming the 2026 State Title in a high-quality final against a strong field including Olive and Willow Hardy, and Grace Cook.
Okie Fraser (Margaret River) led the way as the event’s standout performer, delivering a dominant display in the Pro Junior Men’s division. He posted a perfect 10.00 point ride, in the semi-final with a mix of precision and flair, a ride that also earned him the West Coast Suspensions “Wave of the Weekend”, before carrying that momentum into the final.
He backed it up with a 9.33 for a near-perfect two-wave total of 19.33, before going on to secure victory with a combined total of 17.00 (from a possible 20), finishing ahead of a strong field that included Open Men’s winner Macklin Flynn (Margaret River), Jetaya Hammond (Gracetown) and Ethan Ahola (Margaret River).
“Gas is always such a fun wave, even with wind up the face there was tubes and air sections everywhere. It was so cool to get so many good waves in a comp and get to show a bit of my best surfing. So good to get to have an event out at Gas and I wish there were more of them,” Fraser said.
From the explosive Under-21 Pro Junior division to the inspiring Over-65 Men’s category, the standard remained high across the board.
Belinda Adams (Busselton) led the way in the women’s divisions, claiming titles in both the Over-30 and Over-40 categories, while Samantha Vanderford (Green Head) took top honours in the Over-50 Women’s.
In the men’s divisions, Ash Farrow (Dunsborough) and Jesse Molloy (Witchcliffe) secured wins in the Over-30 and Over-40 respectively. Tony Farris (Cowaramup) claimed the Over-50 title ahead of defending champion Warren Boyes (Dunsborough), while Paul Dupuy (Albany) and Brad Cowan (Esperance), proved age is no barrier, claiming victory in the Over-55 and Over-65 Men’s division’s respectively.
Event champions will now be invited to represent WA at the Australian Shortboard Titles, set to be held in Wollongong, NSW in August.
With the 2026 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships now complete, attention turns to the upcoming Corsaire Aviation King of the Point at Trigg next weekend, where the final two positions into the WA Trials will be confirmed.
