Club pride, bragging rights and more than $5,000 in cash and prizes will be on the line this Saturday, as Western Australia’s best boardrider clubs descend on Scarborough Beach for the 34th Surf Boardroom Surf League presented by Rip Curl.
One of WA’s longest-running and most fiercely contested inter-club surfing events, the Surf League will see six of the state’s top boardrider clubs go head-to-head in a fast-paced team showdown where every wave counts and one big ride can turn the result.
Since 1986, the Surf Boardroom Surf League has brought generations of WA surfers together, building a rich history of memorable performances, friendly rivalries and hard-fought victories. More than three decades on, that competitive fire still burns strong.
Each club will field a six-person team comprising four Open surfers, one Over-35 Master and one Under-18 Junior, with each surfer’s best wave contributing to the overall team score.
It’s a format that rewards consistency, strategy and the ability to perform under pressure, with every surfer playing a part and the title often coming down to the final waves of the day.
Reigning champions Yallingup Boardriders will arrive at Scarborough with a target on their backs as they look to defend their crown, fresh from securing a place in the 2027 Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final alongside Margaret River and Trigg Point.
They will face no shortage of challengers, with Trigg Point, Scarborough, Trigg Junior and Mullaloo representing the metro clubs, while Margaret River will make the trip north ready to shake up the leaderboard.
With 2-3 foot waves and light westerly winds forecast for Saturday, conditions are shaping up for an exciting day of high-performance surfing, adding another ingredient to what is already one of the most unpredictable team events on the WA surfing calendar.
“The Surf Boardroom Surf League has a lot of local prestige. It’s been running for 34 years and it’s a great event that really supports the boardrider clubs and the wider surfing community,” said Yallingup Boardriders President, Timm Uros.
“Of course, it always feels good to get the win and we’d love to defend the title, but the best part is having all the clubs together for the day. You get to catch up with people you haven’t seen for a while, hang out on the beach and have a good laugh, all in a really good spirit.
“There’s always plenty of friendly rivalry too. Margaret River, Trigg and Scarborough are always strong, so you know there’s going to be some great competition.”
Surfing WA Regional Operations Manager, Kim Clift, said the event brings out something special in WA’s boardrider clubs.
“There’s a different energy when surfers pull on the club rashie and they’re competing for their teammates rather than just themselves,” said Clift.
“You’ve got juniors, Open surfers and Masters all playing their part, and every wave can shift the leaderboard. There’s plenty of rivalry, plenty of noise on the beach and usually a few surprises along the way. That’s what makes Surf League such a great event to watch.”
The Surf Boardroom owner, Matt Bowen, said the event’s longevity was testament to the strength of WA’s boardrider club culture.
“To see Surf League still going strong after more than three decades is pretty special,” said Bowen. “Boardrider clubs sit at the core of WA surfing, and this event has always been about bringing those clubs together for a day of great surfing, rivalry and fun.
“We’re incredibly proud to continue supporting an event with so much history and can’t wait to see the clubs battle it out again at Scarborough.”
The Surf Boardroom Surf League is proudly part of the Groundswell Festival, presented by the City of Stirling, bringing two huge days of surf, skate and coastal culture to the Scarborough foreshore.
This year the festival is going ‘Back to its Roots’ in a stripped back version of previous years, focusing on Surf, Skate and BMX over two days of competition.
Spectators are encouraged to head down to Scarborough this Saturday, find a spot on the sand and get behind their local club as WA’s best battle it out for the 2026 Surf Boardroom Surf League title.
