Perth’s premiere surf tournament is set to return to Trigg Point this weekend, with the Corsaire Aviation King of the Point presented by the City of Stirling attracting some of Western Australia’s best and most exciting surfers to the metropolitan beaches.
The action is set to be red-hot both in and out of the water this weekend, as a host of WA’s best surfers converge on the metropolitan beaches to battle it out for over $10k in cash and prizes, as well as for two highly sought-after positions into the Drug Aware Local Trials, the precursor of the World Surf League (WSL) Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro, for the King and Queen of the Point champions.
First run back in 1979, the King of the Point is one of WA’s most iconic events, boasting an impressive honour roll of past champions including Mike McAullife (Margaret River), Dave Macaulay (Gracetown), Jake Paterson (Yallingup), and Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) to name just a few.
With the temperature set to soar, reigning King of the Point Luke Campbell (Trigg) will need to be ice-cold in order to defend his title and stay aloft the Trigg Point throne. An elite field of surfers will challenge King Campbell this weekend with competitors from right across WA set to bring their best to Trigg Point.
“I’ve been surfing out there since I was six years old, in all kinds of conditions,” said Campbell. “The field of surfers competing is really exciting and this is for sure one of my favourite event of the year.”
An impressive group of ladies will also be out to get their hands on a crown in the Queen of the Point division. Spearheading the Queen’s will be former WSL Championship Tour (CT) surfer Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup), who will draw upon her years of experience when she goes up against new school rippers, Emma Cattlin (Yallingup), Mia McCarthy (Margaret River), April McPherson (Mandurah) and Zali Hewson (Margaret River).
“I’m so excited to put on a coloured vest and compete again,” said Bevilacqua. “I learnt my trade growing up surfing the beaches between Fremantle and Trigg Point growing up and the area still feels like home to me.”
Surfing WA is thrilled to again be partnering with Corsaire Aviation to deliver this iconic event to the local surfing community after it was cancelled last year due to COVID-19.
“Corsaire is proud to once again be supporting King of the Point,” said company founder Luke Wyllie. “This is the fourth year we’ve supported this event, we love working with Surfing WA and being part of the community lifestyle that this event represents.”
City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the exciting event would attract some of the state’s best surfers to Trigg Point.
“The City is proud to support King of the Point as it not only showcases the talent of local surfers but it also puts our beautiful City coastline on centre stage,” he said. “Over the weekend there will be plenty happening to entertain visitors of all ages so I look forward to seeing the tough competition and I hope to see plenty of people coming out to support the local talent.”
There will be plenty of action both in and out of the water with heaps of activities and entertainment for the whole family all weekend long. As well as exciting surfing matchups, there will be amazing food and refreshing drinks on offer at Canteen and Island Market, the Vans skate & create zone, live DJ’s, the Tamla Legends premiere, a 360-degree VR (virtual reality) surf film experience, treasure hunts as well as surfboard and fins test areas.
Summer-like surf conditions are forecast this weekend, with warm weather and small swells excepted on Saturday, before building for Sunday’s finals.
Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks is looking forward to rolling out the association’s biggest and best competition on its home beach.
