Excitement is building ahead of the third and final event of the 2024 Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles, presented by Think Mental Health, with some of Western Australia’s top junior surfers gearing up to spend the last days of their school holidays competing along the wave-rich Batavia coastline.
Close to 100 young surfers, aged between 8 and 17 years, will converge on the Mid-West from across the state for an event that will decide who will represent WA at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in Wollongong in New South Wales later this year.
With six state titles still up for grabs, the event will certainly be fierce as surfers strive to etch their name alongside the likes of Taj Burrow (Yallingup), Jack Robinson (Margaret River), Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup), Jacob Willcox (Margaret River), and Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown), who were all WA Junior Champions before competing on the World Championship Tour.
Starting in Yallingup in February and continuing at Trigg Beach in May, the Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles will conclude in Geraldton with competitors set to line up in multiple divisions including; Under-18 Boys, Under-18 Girls, Under-16 Boys, Under-16 Girls, Under-14 Boys, Under-14 Girls, Under-12 Boys and Under-12 Girls.
Fresh off a win in the Under-18 Girls division at Occy’s Grom Comp in Queensland, Ruby Berry (Margaret River), is riding high after her performance and will be one to watch when competition commences on Friday.
Many competitors have sharpened their skills at the Occy Grom Comp on the Gold Coast and the SkullCandy Oz Grom Open in Lennox Heads and will head to Geraldton ready to fire on all cylinders.
Local surfers representing the Mid-West on home soil include; Edel Rodden, Saskaia Newman, Callum Sojan, Kerby Morris Finally Homer and Cruz MacDonald.
Surfing WA’s high-performance coaches will be on hand throughout the event, providing coaching, mentoring, heat preparation, and video analysis to support WA’s emerging surfing stars.
“Geraldton is an ideal surfing destination at this time of year,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “The forecast for the event looks great and it’s exciting to see who’ll join Ily Fraser (Margaret River) and Summer Barkhuizen as our State Champions in 2024.”
Competition will kick off at Flat Rocks, south of Geraldton on Friday morning at 8am and run through to Sunday
