MARGARET RIVER BOARDRIDERS TRIUMPH @ THE 32ND SURF BOARDROOM SURF LEAGUE

In an exhilarating display of Western Australia’s grassroots surfing talent, Margaret River Boardriders have soared to victory at the 32nd edition of The Surf Boardroom Surf League, proudly presented by Rip Curl.

The Surf League is one of WA’s longest running and most prestigious surfing competitions, bringing together  seven metropolitan and regional clubs, who all brought their absolute best, resulting in a thrilling day packed with action, intense rivalries, and a true celebration of mateship, team spirit, loyalty, and camaraderie.

The excitement of the competition was perfectly matched by the stunning conditions on offer at Scarborough Beach. Sunny spring weather delivered better-than-expected surf, and a vibrant beach crowd created a truly unique atmosphere that the Surf League has become famous for.

The Surf League saw each club select their top six surfers—four open-age competitors, one Over-35 Master, and one Under-18 Junior, with each surfer’s top score contributing to their club’s overall tally.

As the sun shone brightly, the temperature rose, so did the of performance levels, as surfers sliced and shredded through Scarborough’s waves with incredible precision and poise, all aiming for the coveted spots in the final showdown.

Margaret River’s surfers rose to the occasion, showcasing determination, commitment, and skill during the 90-minute final. Standout performances from Macklin Flynn, Ben Spence, Solomon Pogue-Englert, Andrew Sheridan, Ace Flynn and Jack Mickle secured the club’s first Surf League victory since 2019.

Spectators and surfing fans were treated to an unforgettable display of surfing as Margaret River were victorious over fierce rivals Scarborough, Yallingup, and Trigg Point in a seesawing final matchup.

Margaret River clinched the win with a combined score of 48.56, edging out Scarborough in second on 42.51. Yallingup finished in third on 39.04, with Trigg Point in fourth on 35.63.

Ben Spence, Margaret River’s power surfer, was stoked with the victory and spoke highly of the event and it’s importance to his club.

“We had a bit of a shocker a couple of weeks ago at the ABB event, so it feels good to come back and redeem ourselves,” said Spence. “Everyone surfed great today and we managed our time really well which is so important in these events, the waves have been really fun and well done to the all the boys.”

Scarborough’s Jake Molloy claimed the coveted Perry Hatchett Award, reserved for the best surfer in the final. Molloy stomped a massive backside aerial reverse earning him the only perfect 10 point ride of the event. As Scarborough’s power surfer Molloy’s score was doubled, giving his club a massive boot on their local beach.

“These have to be some of the best conditions we’ve had for a long time. It was so glassy this morning it was kind of hard to see the lip,” said Molloy. “For an event to go as long as this speaks to how good it is and how much everyone loves it. I’m glad to have done my part for my club to finish second.”

Since 1992, The Surf Boardroom has provided the platform for mate to verse mate and club to verse club, in what has become one of the most competitive and thrilling events on the WA surf calendar.

“We’re incredibly proud to be part of the history of this event,” said Geoff Counsel from The Surf Boardroom. “The atmosphere on the beach is always fantastic, the competition level is first class and to combine the Surf League into the GroundSwell Festival is something that has helped to elevate both events.”

The Surf League has become a rite of passage for many WA surfers, it is where legends are made, rivalries were born, and WA’s amazing boardriding club culture. The 32nd Surf Boardroom Surf League celebrated the immense talent found within grassroots boardriding clubs. This epic event wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from The Surf Boardroom, participating clubs, surfers, and dedicated supporters.
