Surfing WA would like to thank our incredible surfing community for the outpouring of love and support shown for our much-loved CEO Mark Lane. Hundreds of family, friends, colleagues and members of the surfing community came together on Friday to farewell Mark, affectionately known as “Laney”, and celebrate his life. Afterwards, people gathered at Surfing WA to share stories and memories of a man who had such a profound impact on those around him.
That support continued on Saturday morning, when close to 500 people gathered at Scarborough to paddle out in Laney’s memory, while communities from Exmouth to Albany took to the water at the same time in coordinated paddle outs across WA. Tributes also flowed nationally from the Australian Shortboard Titles in Wollongong and internationally from the World Surf League’s Fiji Pro, demonstrating just how far Laney’s impact reached.
Surfing WA Acting CEO and COO Matt Wilson said the support shown over the past week had meant an enormous amount to Laney’s family, friends and everyone at Surfing WA.
“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who came together to farewell Laney, paddled out in his memory, shared a story, sent a message or simply took a moment to remember him,” said Wilson. “The love shown for Laney has been incredibly moving and says so much about the impact he had on people.”
Laney’s connection to Trigg will also live on, with the City of Stirling announcing the lookout alongside Surfing WA’s headquarters will be named ‘Laney’s Lookout’ in his honour.
“It’s fitting that Laney’s Lookout will be a place where people stop, check the waves and have a chat, because that sense of connection was such a big part of who Laney was,” he said. “He leaves an enormous legacy in surfing, but it was his genuine care for people and the surfing community that will be remembered most.”
