THE 2022 CORSAIRE AVIATION KING OF THE POINT PREPARES FOR A ROYAL RUMBLE AT TRIGG POINT

Perth’s premiere surf tournament is preparing to return to Trigg Point next week, with the 2022 Corsaire Aviation King of the Point presented by the City of Stirling enticing some of Western Australia’s best and most exciting surfers to the metropolitan beaches.

First run back in 1979, the King of the Point is one of WA’s most iconic events, boasting an impressive honour roll of past champions including WA legends; Mike McAullife (Margaret River), Dave Macaulay (Gracetown), Jake Paterson (Yallingup) and Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) to name just a few.

The action is set to be red-hot both in and out of the water, as a host of WA’s best surfers converge on Trigg Point to battle it out for over $10k in cash and prizes up for grabs.

Surfing WA will award two highly sought-after positions into the Drug Aware WA Local Trials, the precursor event to the World Surf League (WSL) Margaret River Pro, to the King and Queen of the Point champions.

This royal treasure has attracted an elite field of surfers who will challenge to sit on top of the throne, with competitors from WA’s five surfing regions preparing to lay siege of the Kingdom of Trigg!

The reigning King of the Point, Max Marsden (Geraldton) will face off against the likes of regional shredders Jack Thomas (Yallingup), George Simpson (Gracetown), Otis North (Yallingup) and Duke Nagtzaam (Yallingup). While local hopes Luke Campbell (Trigg), Pascal Hutchinson (Trigg) and Fletcher Llanwarne (Sorrento) will be out to keep the crown on their home beach when competition gets underway next week.

An equally impressive group of ladies will also be out to get their hands on the crown in the Queen of the Point division. Mia McCarthy (Cowaramup), Emma Cattlin (Yallingup) and Ruby Berry (Augusta) will spearhead a regal line up of talent.

Other divisions to be contested include Lord of the Point (Over-40 Men’s), Prince of the Point (Under-21 Men), Princess of the Point (Under-21 Women) and Jester of the Point (Under-16 Boys).

Surfing WA is thrilled to again be partnering with Corsaire Aviation to deliver this iconic event to the local surfing community.

“Corsaire is proud to once again be supporting King of the Point,” said company founder Luke Wyllie. “This is the fifth year Corsaire has supported this iconic grass roots events and we love working with Surfing WA and being part of the community lifestyle that this event represents.”

City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the exciting event would attract some of the state’s best surfers to Trigg Point.

“Since its inception 43 years ago, the City has been supporting King of the Point because it’s a fantastic event that’s become firmly embedded in the annual event calendar. With activities, entertainment, stalls, live DJs, demonstrations and more, there is always something on offer for everyone,” he said. “It’s great to see the event is also supporting junior sport development, with involvement from the Trigg Junior Boardriders Club. I look forward to the weekend delivering some excellent competition on our beautiful beaches in the City of Stirling.”

There will be plenty of action both in and out of the water with heaps of activations and entertainment for the whole family all weekend long. As well as exciting surfing matchups in the water, there will be amazing food and refreshing drinks on offer at Canteen and Island Market, the Vans skate & create zone will allow kids to skateboard and get crafty, live DJ’s will keep the vibes high, while kids treasure hunts, as well as surfboard test centres.

Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks is looking forward to rolling out one of the association’s biggest and best competition on it’s home beach.

“We’re super excited to be hosting this prestigious event on Perth’s best surfing beach,” said Majeks. “Thanks to the ongoing support of our key partners Corsaire Aviation and the City of Stirling, we’re able to promote the rich history of this event and the future stars of the sport.”

The health and safety of everyone involved in the Corsaire Aviation King of the Point is and will remain a priority when planning and executing the event. Event organisers have developed an extensive COVID-Safe plan to ensure the safety of all spectators, participants and workers on site.

King of the Point will be proceeding in line with the WA Government’s new phase 2 COVID restrictions, with a 500-person capacity within the event space at any one time. There are a few measures that will be put in place for King of the Point as noted below:

  • Face masks are required at the event (not while competing or partaking in vigorous exercise such as the mini ramp).
  • We will be managing the capacity via entry and exit points throughout the day to ensure we stay under the 500-person capacity
  • We be providing reminders for competitors and spectators to practice social distancing, good hygiene and to check in with the event QR code.

COVID restrictions may vary in the short to medium term, so we will continue to monitor the situation and adapt our plan if and when required.

Small summer-like surf is set to make the going tough, with small but clean surf forecast for Saturday and Sunday. Competition is likely to get underway early on Saturday with finals running on Sunday.
Surfing WA will be streaming live heat scores and results from the King of the Point so people can to follow the event anywhere on the planet. Be sure to check out: www.surfingwalive.com.au
