The 2024 Think Mental Health WA Bodyboard Championships presented by Good Earth Surf, is preparing for some adrenaline-pumping action in Margaret River this weekend, with some of Western Australia’s most experienced and exciting bodyboard talent set to compete.
After a successful return to the Surfing WA events calendar in 2023, Gas Bay will again play host to the competition, with the iconic reef break providing an amazing bodyboarding venue, with hollow waves and big sections set to provide a spectacle for competitors across multiple divisions ranging from Under-14’s Grommets through to Over-45 Grand Masters.
Reigning Australian Champions Ebony Schell (Mindarie) and Kia De Legh (Padbury) are set to headline the field, joined by an array of Western Australia’s most skilled and dynamic bodyboarders, who will be out to qualify for the Australian Bodyboard Titles later this year.
Schell, will come into the event full of confidence after taking part in her first International Bodyboarding Corporation (IBC), event in Morocco recently where she placed 17th overall and was the lone Australian in the event.
The 20 year old will be out to win her third consecutive Australian Title in 2024, after taking out top honours in 2022 and 2023.
Seasoned veterans like Chad Jackson (Dunsborough), Ben Veitch (Margaret River) and Brendan Gabel (Scarborough), will bring a wealth of experience to the event and will lead the way for the up-and-coming talents from both the south-west and metropolitan regions.
“Western Australia has always been a breeding ground of amazing talent, with the likes of Ryan Hardy, Sean Virtue, and Brad Hughes pushing the sport forward through the late 90’s and early 2000’s,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “We’re thrilled to be hosting the event at Gas Bay and I wish all our competitors the best of luck.”
The Think Mental Health WA Bodyboard Championship presented by Good Earth Surfers offers competitors a chance to compete in some of the best waves the state has to offer, whilst providing a pathway to take on the best bodyboarders in Australia.
