THE FINAL EVENT OF THE SUNSMART WA BODYBOARD TITLES SET TO SPLASH DOWN IN MINDARIE THIS WEEKEND

Anticipation is building ahead of this weekend’s SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles presented by Good Earth, with Surfing Western Australia set to crown their first State Champions for 2021 at Clayton’s Beach in Mindarie.

After an exciting opening event of the series back in March, some of WA’s most newest and most experienced bodyboarders are set to line up along Perth’s northern beaches in hopes of travelling to Port Macquarie in NSW for the National Bodyboard Titles later this year.

Clayton’s has been a mecca for metropolitan bodyboarders for years, with the area producing plenty of quality waves and talented riders, with Ocean Reef’s Lewy Finnegan arguably one of Australia’s brightest bodyboard prospects.

“At the right time of year, usually late autumn when the sand is right and we have good conditions it’s easily the best wave in Perth in my opinion,” said Finnegan. “The angle that the wedge rebounds off the break wall is so perfect that it moves the whole way down the beach, not just providing one A-frame, but sometimes up to 4 different peaks all the way down the beach because of the seemingly never-ending push of the wedge.”

With eight separate divisions on offer for both men and women, it’s going to be electrifying weekend of high-performance bodyboarding in Mindarie. 19-year old Josh De Legh (Padbury) comes in as a fancied favourite after an impressive win at event one in Mandurah.

Former National Champions Brendan Gabel (Scarborough) and Jake Metcalfe (Scarborough) will be riders to keep an eye on as well as local siblings Ebony and Riley Schell (Mindarie) who are both out to claim State Title glory on their home break.

“We are excited to once again be hosting the SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles at our very own Clayton’s Beach,” said Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts. “I have no doubt this event will be a massive highlight for the very talented bodyboarders we have in Western Australia. I wish everyone participating the best of luck in the competition and I hope to see many locals making their way to Port Macquarie for the Nationals later this year.”

The SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles offers competitors a chance to compete in a safe, fun and friendly environment, whilst also mixing it up with some of the best up and coming talent in Australia.
