THE WA SUP SURFING STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS HEADING TO MARGARET RIVER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2022

The 2022 North Freo Stand Up Surf Shop SUP WA State Championships presented by SunSmart, will kick off this coming Friday in the wave-rich Margaret River region, with three-days of challenging conditions set to test some of WA’s very best SUP surfers.

This will be the first time since SUP’s inclusion as one of Surfing Australia’s official boardriding codes, that the State Titles will be held in Margaret River, with high hopes for some quality surf as competitors set their sights on the 2022 Australian SUP Titles, scheduled to take place on Phillip Island, VIC in October.

The event is set to be an exciting exhibition of surfing’s newest discipline, with WA producing some of the best SUP riders in the country, with multiple national champions and experienced watermen and women preparing to compete.

Southside’s at Surfers Point will be the primary event location, with the reef break handling a wide range of conditions.

“There’s a lot of excitement around hosting a SUP event in the south-west,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “Despite some wind, we’re definitely looking forward to the WA SUP Titles touching down at such an iconic location later this week.”

Competitors from across WA will line up in a diverse range of age divisions including; Open Men, Open Women, Under-18 Juniors, Over-40 Men, Over-40 Women, Over-50 Men & Over-60 Men. The 10ft plus divisions will also create plenty of highlights as big boards tackle big waves.

Chris Twomey (Karrinyup), Monica McNab (Karrinyup) Jamie Ralston (Bicton), Susannah Wilson (Cottesloe), Darron McNab (Karrinyup), Crawford Olney (Spearwood), Richard Wain (Dunsborough) and Isaac Nettlebeck (Karridale), will be come into the event as the number one seeds and will be out to defend their State Titles from 2021.

While brothers Rick and Jake Jakovich (Gracetown), David Muir (Claremont) and Scott McKercher (Margaret River), will be the guys to keep an eye on this weekend, should the swell build.

Competition is likely to get underway under sunny skies on Friday, with a building swell and strong SE winds forecast for the weekend. The three-day event will feature a double-elimination format and Surfing WA will be streaming live heat scores and results from the North Freo Stand Up Surf Shop SUP State Championships so people can to follow the event anywhere on the planet.
