Western Australia’s top bodyboarders are set to converge on one of the state’s most iconic reef breaks, with the 2026 Think Mental Health WA Bodyboard Championships presented by Good Earth Surf Shop heading back to Gas Bay this Sunday, March 22.
After a run of events across various locations in recent years, the return to Gas Bay signals a welcome homecoming for the state’s premier bodyboarding event, with the powerful, hollow waves of Margaret River expected to provide a high-performance stage for competitors across all divisions.
The one-day championship will see WA’s best riders go head-to-head for state titles, national qualification opportunities, and bragging rights among the local bodyboarding community.
Reigning Open champion Kai De Legh will look to defend their titles after a standout performance in 2025, but with a strong field of emerging talent and experienced chargers in the mix, competition is expected to be fierce from the opening heat.
Gas Bay is renowned for its fast, punchy waves and heavy sections, rewarding commitment and technical ability, a perfect match for the progression and power that defines modern bodyboarding in Western Australia.
Surfing WA Competition Director Pete Carrol said the return to Margaret River adds an extra layer of excitement to this year’s event.
“The WA Bodyboard Titles are set to showcase some of the state’s most dynamic and progressive riders this weekend, with competitors ready to take on the renowned reef of Gas Bay. WA’s long been home to some of the best underground bodyboarders in the country, this event is a chance for them to step up and make their mark.” Carrol said.
“With a mix of emerging talent and seasoned chargers, we’re expecting high energy performances, big moves and an incredible display of skill and commitment in the surf. We can’t wait”
The Think Mental Health WA Bodyboard Championships provide a clear pathway for Western Australian riders to take on the country’s best and qualify for the Australian Titles to be held in Newcastle later this year.
Competition is scheduled to run on Sunday, March 22, with heats kicking off from early morning. Live scores and updates will be available via LiveHeats.
The WA Bodyboard Championships are proudly presented by Good Earth Surf Shop, with support from Think Mental Health, Healthway, Road Safety Commission WA, and Surfing WA’s valued partners.
