2025 STATE SURFING CHAMPIONS AND SURFERS OF THE YEAR

Published on 10/11/2025

The state’s surfing elite gathered over the weekend as Surfing Western Australia hosted its annual State Champions and Surfers of the Year presentation, celebrating the depth of talent, passion and community spirit driving WA surfing.

Across the 2025 season, 47 State Champions were crowned in Junior Shortboard, Open Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard and SUP divisions. The presentation brought together all divisions for the first time this year, uniting competitors from every corner of the state to reflect on another incredible season.

Surfing WA Chief Operations Officer Matt Wilson said the gathering was a great way to wrap up the competitive season and acknowledge those who continue to shape the sport in Western Australia.

“It was a wonderful celebration of our surfing community,” he said. “From juniors to seasoned masters who’ve dedicated a lifetime to the sport, every champion recognised this season has contributed to the strength and spirit of surfing in WA. Their achievements continue to inspire the next generation to chase their dreams.”

Among this year’s State Champions were three national titleholders, including Margaret River junior Olive Hardy, Cowaramup longboarder John Haddow, and Mindarie bodyboarder Ebony Schell, who claimed a record-breaking fourth consecutive Australian crown.

The event also saw the announcement of the Western Australian Surfer of the Year Awards, honouring outstanding performances across all levels of competition and named after WA icons Ian Cairns, Jodie Cooper, Murray Smith and Mike McAuliffe.

Margaret River’s Jack Robinson was recognised as the Ian Cairns Male Surfer of the Year after a stellar season on the WSL Championship Tour that included wins at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and Tahiti Pro, qualifying for his fourth straight WSL Finals and finishing fifth in the world. Willow Hardy, also from Margaret River, earned the Jodie Cooper Female Surfer of the Year after qualifying for the 2025/26 WSL Challenger Series and securing her spot in the Margaret River Pro via the Think Mental Health WA Trials.

Rising star Olive Hardy was named the Murray Smith Junior Surfer of the Year after being crowned Under-18 Girls Champion in the Aussie Junior Online Surf Championships and Under-16 Australian Junior Champion in 2024. She was also selected for the Irukandjis team to represent Australia at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in December 2025.

Margaret River’s Jacob Willcox received the Mike McAuliffe Performance Award following standout results on the WSL Challenger Series, including a victory at Newcastle Surfest and a career-best Quarterfinal finish at the Margaret River Pro.

Surfing WA looks forward to the continued success and inspiring performances of this year’s champions and award recipients, whose talent, dedication and sportsmanship continue to define Western Australia’s proud surfing legacy.
