The inaugural SheShreds competition made waves at Trigg Beach last weekend, providing a unique opportunity for female surfers to showcase their abilities and compete against likeminded women who share a love for the sport.
The competition was a hit, attracting participants from across the state, with surfers traveling from as far south as Margaret River and as far north as Geraldton.
“We were absolutely thrilled with the amount of love and attention the competition received,” said Madeline Cox, co-founder of the SheShreds event. “We filled all 85 entry positions and had our inboxes flooded with girls wanting to enter.”
The event featured six divisions, including a new ‘Intro to Comps’, category for beginner surfers and those new to competition. The division provided a welcoming environment for newcomers to enter the competitive scene and connect with other female surfers. The event also included an ‘Open Womens’ division for those looking to push their competitive limits.
“It’s so cool to be in an environment where everyone is supporting each other and it’s all about having fun,” said 16-year-old competitor Willow Potter.
Chloe Campbell, co-founder of SheShreds said she and fellow organisers recognised a gap for female surfers, specifically post junior surfing competitions.
“Our goal was to create a space where females of all ages could feel comfortable, empowered, supported and inspired to compete,” she said. “It was fantastic to see the talent and passion of female surfers, and we’re excited to take another step towards a more inclusive and supportive surfing community.”
