The 2025 West Coast Suspensions WA Longboard Championships, presented by Think Mental Health, wrapped up over the weekend with a spectacular celebration of style, skill, and community spirit along WA’s stunning south coast.
From dreamy conditions on Saturday to powerful, testing swells on finals day, Parry’s Beach served up a full spectrum of longboard waves. Thirteen State Champions were crowned across a mix of junior, open, and senior divisions, highlighting WA’s deep longboarding talent from Exmouth to Esperance.
In the Open Men’s final, Dunsborough’s Jack Medland made a triumphant return to competition, blending traditional and progressive manoeuvres to claim the State Title. Medland posted a near-perfect 9.17 (out of a possible 10) for his power and footwork, backing it up with a 6.33 to finish with a combined total of 15.50 (from a possible 20).
“Saturday we had amazing waves, it was Parry’s at its finest but today was a bit more of a scrimmage so full credit to everyone getting out and giving a good nudge,” said Medland. “Massive shout out to Surfing WA, the judges, Dobbo on the ski and just everyone for coming down. It’s all about community and to see everyone coming down year after year, it’s just amazing.”
The competition was fierce, with Evan Ledger (Yallingup), Ryan Clark (Dunsborough) and Scott Trew (Gabbadah), pushing Medland all the way. In a nail-biting showdown, Ledger claimed second, Clark took third, and Trew rounded out the final in fourth place.
In the Open Women’s, defending champion Maddie Barrett (Cottesloe) made back-to-back State Titles. Originally from Geraldton, Barrett looked composed in the powerful swell, combining flow and finesse to edge out Denver Young (Claremont), (Georgia Young (Perth) and Shae Sheridan (Dunsborough).
“Saturday was fun, I really enjoyed myself. Today I probably needed Billy [Gibson], to teach me how to get out the back,” joked Barrett. “But honestly, the best part is the community. I had just as much fun on the beach as I did in the water, it’s always just a great vibe.”
Paul Burke (Dunsborough) put on a masterclass in the Over-40 Men’s final, sealing victory with a buzzer-beater ride ahead of Scott Trew (Gabbadah), Tim Trew (Busselton), and Jock Bahen (Cowaramup).
“I was out at the bombie getting smashed, thinking these guys have got me,” said Burke. “Luckily, I got one with five-minutes to go. These guys are super hard to beat so I’m pretty stoked with the win because I’ve been surfing against Scotty for years and he usually gets me.”
Burke (Dunsborough) also took out the Over-50’s Men’s division, becoming the only competitor to claim two State Tiles in Denmark. His powerful performance included excellent scores of 9.00 (from a possible 10) and backup score of 8.17, again tackling the bombie when few others dared.
“I surfed where no one else wanted to go, less competition that way,” he laughed.
Other standout performances included wins from Shae Sheridan (Dunsborough) in the Over-40 Women’s final, Amanda Curley (Margaret River) who took out the Over 50 Women’s division, and Judy Dann (Two Rocks) who was successful in the Over-60 Women’s.
While in other results, Keith Lingard (Denmark) won the Over-55 Men’s final, Doug Carruthers (Margaret River) was the best of the Over-60 Men’s competitors, Bill Gibson (Margaret River) was dominant in the Over-65’s, and John Haddow (Cowaramup) won the Over-70 Men’s.
The future of WA longboarding looks bright, with two sets of brothers reaching the final in the Under 18 Boys division. Kai Flynn (Cowaramup) led the charge, claiming the State Title ahead of Max Horwood (Hillarys), Taylor Flynn (Cowaramup), and Qynn Horwood (Hillarys).
“Congratulations to all our champions and National Title qualifiers,” said Surfing WA Regional Operations Manager Kim Clift. “This weekend was another brilliant reminder of the talent and community spirit in WA longboarding.”
Following the success in Denmark, attention now turns to the 26th Whalebone Longboard Classic in Cottesloe this July, offering one more opportunity for WA’s best to fine-tune ahead of the Australian Titles later this year.
