GERALDTON TURNS IT ON FOR SPECTACULAR JUNIOR STATE TILES SHOWDOWN

Published on 21/07/2025

Four new State Champions have been crowned at Flat Rocks in Geraldton, as WA’s best junior surfers brought the 2025 WA Junior Surfing Titles, presented by Think Mental Health, to a spectacular close over the weekend.

More than 80 competitors from across the state converged on the Batavia Coast for the third and final stop of the prestigious three-event series. With sunny skies and clean 3-6 foot surf on offer, Geraldton delivered an unforgettable finale and confirmed who will represent Team WA at the national titles later this year.

In the Under-18 Boys, Jack Bulloch (Secret Harbour) stole the show, unleashing his best performance of the series to take the win. Bulloch scored an excellent 8.17 (out of 10) and backed it up for a 14.50 total (out of 20), edging out an elite field of Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), Jetaya Hammond (Gracetown), and Okie Fraser (Margaret River).

“I’ve had quite a few seconds over the years, so it feels good to finally crack the code,” said Bulloch. “Mav (Maverick Wilson) surfed so well. I was just aiming to win the heat and I got a couple of good ones at the start and finished strong.”

Wilson’s second-place finish was enough to secure him the Under-18 State Title, thanks to a consistent run across the series with a first at Trigg and third at Margaret River.

“It was an epic weekend,” said Wilson. “Flat Rocks turned it on and gave us the chance to showcase all different types of surfing.”

It marks Wilson’s ninth career State Title, and his final as a junior, before turning his attention to the WSL Qualifying Series in 2026.

“This one is probably my favourite,” said Wilson. “Everyone’s surfing is next level this year so I’m super stoked to get this one. This is my last year in the juniors so it’s pretty sweet.”

In the Under-18 Girls final, Mia Jacobs (Gracetown) brought the beach to life with one of the highest heat totals of the event. She scored a 15.87, including a near-perfect 9.50 for a powerful layback hack on the end section.

“It’s definitely the biggest score of my surfing career. That wave is one I won’t forget,” said Jacobs.

Olive Hardy (Margaret River) claimed the Under-18 Girls State Title, with strong results at Margaret River and Trigg securing her position before the final event.

Local favourite Cruz Macdonald (Geraldton) delivered one of the event’s best performances to win the Under-16 Boys. He posted a 9.33 and a 7.83 in the final, the highest combined heat total of the weekend (17.16 out of 20), ahead of Ace Flynn (Cowaramup), Zenn Hammond (Gracetown) and Jahli Clarke (Cowaramup).

“That was my best heat of the comp,” said Macdonald. “Ace (Flynn) and I were just going wave for wave, it was such a fun final.”

Competition was fierce in the Under-16 Girls final, with Leila Fraser (Margaret River) delivering her best performance of the series. Her powerful rail work earned a 14.67 heat total (out of 20), enough to take the win ahead of Poppy Redman Carr (Dunsborough), Amelia Boxall (Quindalup) and Grace Cook (Cowaramup).

“It feels amazing to get the win. They’re all such good surfers so it was cool to win one,” said Fraser.

The race for the Under 16’s Girls State Title was one of the tightest of the series. It came down to a countback between Fraser, Redman Carr, and Grace Cook, who each claimed an event win and runner-up finish across the three stops. Ultimately, it was Redman Carr who cinched the State Title.

“It feels really great,” said Redman Carr. “I’ve really wanted to take State Title for a while, and it feels so good to have finally achieved it.”

Jasper Glossop (Margaret River) was in fine form all event, showing his style and flair in the Under-14 Boys. His win at Geraldton also secured the Under 14 State Title.

“The waves at Geraldton were pumping and it was a close final with my friends. I was so happy to take the win,” said Glossop. “My goal this year was to win the U14 State Title and make the national team – I’m so stoked,” he said.

In the Under-14 Girls, Rosie Annesley (Margaret River) put together her best heat of the event, scoring a heat high of 7.67 (out of 10) and a combined total of 14.57 (out of 20), to finish ahead of Lily Naylor (Cowaramup), Summer Barkhuizen (Eglinton), and Jessica Quayle (Exmouth).

Ily Fraser (Margaret River)was crowned the Under 14 Girls State Champion after dominant performances at the first two events of the series. With wins at both the Margaret River and Trigg, Fraser locked in enough points to secure the title before the final round.

A showcase of WA’s youngest up-and-comers, the Under-12 Micro Grom divisions highlighted the future of surfing in style.

In the Boys division, Finn Sapwell (Dunsborough) impressed with his speed and confidence, taking out the Geraldton win with an 11.50 heat total. He finished ahead of Eden Nicoll (Padbury), Vander McEwan (Marmion), Flynn Roberts (Cowaramup) and Oscar Cawley (Cowaramup).

Kyuss Rimmer (Trigg) was crowned the Under-12 Boys State Champion after winning both Margaret River and Trigg.

In the Girls division, Amelie Waddell (Wembley Downs) rose to the top with a composed and stylish performance, finishing ahead of Indiana McEwan (Marmion) at Flat Rocks.

Luna Thomas (Margaret River) secured the Under-12 Girls State Title with back-to-back wins at the opening two events.

The three-event series began in Margaret River in February, continued to Trigg in June, and concluded in Geraldton. Surfing WA will now shift focus to preparing the WA State Team for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula in November.

“I’d like to congratulate our 2025 State Champions and divisional winners,” said Surfing WA Regional Manager Kim Clift. “They’ve shown incredible talent and resilience across different locations and conditions, and that’s what it takes to succeed on the national stage.”

The WA Junior Surfing Titles, presented by Think Mental Health, continue to act as a launchpad for elite talent in WA, with past champions including Taj Burrow, Jack Robinson, Claire Bevilacqua, Jacob Willcox and Bronte Macaulay, all claiming junior state titles before moving onto the World Championship Tour, paving the way for WA’s new generation of surfing stars to follow.

The Think Mental Health WA School Surfing Titles are also underway, giving young surfers more chances to qualify for nationals. The Mid-West regional event will take place in Geraldton on Monday July 28.
