GROMS SET THEIR SIGHTS ON TRIGG FOR STOP # 2 OF THE WOOLWORTHS STATE JUNIOR SURFING TITLES

Froth levels are building ahead the second event of the Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles presented by Think Mental Health, with over 100 of Western Australia’s best junior surfers preparing to compete along Perth’s metropolitan beaches later this week.

A horde of WA best young groms aged between 8 and 17, are set to converge on Trigg Beach from all corners of the state, for the second of three events that will determine who will represent WA at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in Wollongong, NSW later this year. Many of WA’s top surfers cut their teeth competing at the Junior Titles as grommets, with Taj Burrow (Yallingup), Ry Craike (Kalbarri), Creed McTaggart (Margaret River), Jack Robinson (Margaret River), Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup), Jacob Willcox (Margaret River), and Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown), all claiming prestigious State Championships in the past.

After kicking off in Yallingup back in February, competitors can look forward to a favourable forecast, with finally some swell set to provide plenty of opportunity and excitement across the three-day event window.

Finn Lange (Margaret River), Kaleisha Launders (Margaret River), Cruz Uros (Dunsborough), Rosie Gillett (Dunsborough), Cruz Macdonald (Geraldton), Ily Fraser (Margaret River), Nate Spooner (Yallingup), and Summer Barkhuizen (Eglinton), will head to Trigg as the top-seeded surfers after impressive round one showings.

They’ll face no shortage of opposition from local surfers, as well as those traveling from the regions to compete.

Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough) will be a surfer to keen an eye on, hot off his recent success at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Championships in El Salvador. Wilson finished equal 8th overall in the Under-16 Boys division and helped Team Australia claim their first gold medal in over 10 years.

Surfing WA high-performance coaches Matt Wilson and Ian McPherson will be on-beach throughout the event, mentoring and guiding WA’s newest generation of surfing stars.

“This is a really important event, we’ve got competitors looking to back up their results from Yallingup, or make their presence felt on the rankings heading into the final event of the series in Geraldton in July,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “We’ve got some amazing talent here in Western Australia and I wish all of our competitors the very best of luck.”

Heats will commence on Friday at 8am, with the swell forecast to increase on Saturday and through to finals day on Sunday.
