NEW SHARK MONITORING RECEIVER INSTALLED AT MARGARET RIVER AHEAD OF WA LOCAL TRIALS AND MARGARET RIVER PRO

Published on 01/04/2026

A new shark monitoring receiver has been installed at Main Break, Margaret River, strengthening safety measures for surfers and ocean users ahead of the upcoming WA Local Trials and the World Surf League Margaret River Pro.

Installed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), the receiver forms part of Western Australia’s Shark Monitoring Network, which detects tagged sharks and provides near real-time alerts through the SharkSmart WA app and website.

Located off Surfers Point, the receiver strengthens monitoring coverage at one of Western Australia’s most iconic surf breaks.

While the system only detects sharks that have been tagged, it provides valuable information to help ocean users make more informed decisions before entering the water.

Surfing WA encourages all surfers to check the SharkSmart WA app before heading out and to report any shark sightings.

Surfing WA partners with DPIRD to help promote the SharkSmart WA service, sharing important safety information with the surfing community and encouraging ocean users to stay informed when enjoying Western Australia’s coastline.

With world-class waves and global attention returning to Margaret River in the coming weeks, the additional monitoring helps support safer ocean use for locals and visiting surfers alike.
