MARGARET RIVER WA/AUS (Monday 17th March 2025), Margaret River roared with excitement as the 2025 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships, presented by Think Mental Health, wrapped up in spectacular fashion. Over three unforgettable days, competitors battled through a thrilling mix of conditions. Wet, wild and windy weather made way for glassy perfection, with eleven state champions emerging victorious in pumping surf at Gas Bay.
Bringing together some of Western Australia’s most exciting and experienced competitors, the event delivered a little bit of everything, highlighting the depth of talent from across the state. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, the competition was fierce, and the performances nothing short of world-class.
Day one greeted competitors with challenging, raw and powerful surf, testing their ability to navigate shifting peaks and heavy walls of water. Swell and wind peaked on day two, with an unruly ocean and gusty winds making the going tough. Finals day delivered flawless waves that allowed surfers to truly showcase their skills, with explosive turns, deep barrels, and dramatic finals on offer.
No one seized their opportunities better than Okie Fraser (Margaret River), the current Under-18 Boys state champion, continued his devastating form in 2025, stealing the show in the Open Men’s final. Fraser combined precision and flair, posting a near perfect 9.38 (from a possible 10), on his opening wave of the final for a deep and technical tube ride. Fraser then backed it up with 5.70, finishing on a combined total of 15.08 (from a possible 20).
Fraser’s triumph not only earned him his first Open Men’s state title, but also a golden ticket to the Think Mental Health WA Trials, where he’ll surf for a wildcard into the World Surf League Margaret River Pro in May.
“It’s pumping out there! Gas is my home break and to get waves like this on finals day is a real treat,” said Fraser. “I made the semi-finals at the Trials last year and I’d love to make the final this year.”
Ruby Berry (Margaret River), brought the heat and unleashed her powerful backhand attack to claim victory in the Open Women’s final, with a combined total of 15.91 (from a possible 20), that included an 8.33 and 7.58. Berry who is the reigning Under-18 Girls state champion, showed all the signs of future stardom, with committed turns and great wave selection the trademarks of her performance.
Berry will also line up run the Think Mental Health WA Trials, where she finished second behind Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown), in 2024.
“To surf pumping Gas with all the girls and pushing each other all the way was so fun,” said Berry. “I’m excited to get back into the Trials and hopefully I can make it into the Pro this year. Thanks to Surfing WA for such a sick event”
From the explosive Under-21 Pro Junior division to the inspiring Over-65 Men’s category, every division delivered standout performances.
Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), lit up the Pro Junior final, taking the win ahead of some of WA’s most exciting young surfers, including Jake Hagan (Geraldton), Ethan Ahola (Margaret River), and Jetaya Hammond (Gracetown).
Shae Sheridan (Dunsborough), won the Over-30 Women’s division, with local surfboard shaper Zak Ogram (Dunsborough), the best of the Over-30 Men.
Belinda Adams (Busselton), created history by winning the first ever Over-40 Women’s state title.
South-West stalwarts Andrew Sheridan (Margaret River), and Warren Boyes (Dunsborough), defended their state titles in the Over-40 Men’s and Over-50 Men’s respectively.
Mark Clift (Trigg), claimed a rare double-title victory, winning both the Over-55 and Over-60 Men’s divisions.
While Brent Moss (Esperance), proved age is no barrier with victory in the Over-65 Men division.
Event champions will now be invited to represent WA at the Australian Shortboard Titles, set to be held in Wollongong, NSW in August.
Okie Fraser (Margaret River), claimed the West Coast Suspensions Wave of the Weekend, for the highest score of the event, a 9.40 (from a possible 10), in his Open Men’s semi final.
Ash Farrow (Dunsborough), was awarded a $500 Hello World Travel Dunsborough voucher for his performances across the Over-30 and Over-40 Men’s divisions. Farrow suffered a hideous wipeout at Gas Bay last year and left the event in an ambulance. Farrow’s comeback to competition was nothing short of inspiring, with some amazing tube rides and blistering manoeuvres highlighting his performance.
“That was a world-class event with surfing to match,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks.“Margaret River delivered contrasting conditions across three days, bringing out the very best from our competitors and making for an unforgettable state championships. Congratulations to all the winners, and huge props to Okie and Ruby. Bring on the WA Trials in May!”
With the 2025 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships now in the books, all eyes turn to the upcoming Corsaire Aviation King of the Point at Trigg, where the final two positions into the Think Mental Health WA Trials will be confirmed.
