SHE SHREDS CELEBRATES FEMALE SURFING AT TRIGG BEACH

Nearly 70 female surfers from across Western Australia, from Esperance to Geraldton, came together at Trigg on Sunday for the second annual SheShreds surf competition.

Founded and run by local surfers Chloe Campbell, Maddy Cox, Kim Horwood, Skyla Tothill and Emma Cattlin, the one-day event was a high energy celebration of talent, progression and community in women’s surfing.

Hosted by Trigg Junior Boardriders and supported by Surfing WA, the City of Stirling, Menace Company and Made For It Wetsuits, SheShreds brought together surfers of all levels and all ages, from groms to over 30s, united by a love for the ocean and the sport.

Despite large, powerful swell and challenging onshore winds, competitors stepped up, showing true grit and style across every division.

“Conditions were super tricky, but it’s been amazing to see the girls challenge and push themselves,” said SheShreds co-founder Skyla Tothill. “People walking by were saying, ‘Wow, it’s all girls out there, and it’s massive!’ It wasn’t easy out there, but everyone rose to the occasion.”

A major new inclusion in 2025 was a free female surf coaching tent, funded by the City of Stirling and led by elite WA coach Emma Cattlin, giving competitors a boost of confidence and support throughout the day.

There were standout performances in every heat. In the Open Women’s final, Cowaramup’s Grace Cook claimed the win ahead of Trigg’s Coco Laurie, Yallingup’s Emma Cattlin and Margaret River’s Leila Fraser.

“I’m so happy that I took it out,” said Cook. “The waves were hard, but all the girls were ripping. The vibe has been so good and everyone’s been so nice, so it feels really good to take the win.”

Dunsborough’s Lily Boxall dominated the 21 and Under division, while the 16 and Unders saw a tight battle between Poppy Redman Carr and Indie Siedmiogrodzki, with Poppy clinching the win in the final moments.

The 12 and Unders impressed the crowd by taking on double overhead sets, with Ily Fraser emerging victorious in a tight final against Summer Barkhuizen. In the Over 30s, Carly Bruce took the win ahead of Georgia Young, who placed second just 11 weeks after giving birth.

One of the most special moments of the day was seeing multiple mums and daughters competing and cheering each other on.

“There was so much energy and excitement all day,” said Tothill. “It’s been competitive, but in a really supportive way and that’s what it should be. The girls were building their skills in a supportive environment. It’s inspiring to see that.”

SheShreds co-founder Kim Horwood said the surfing was next level, but it was the spirit of the community that made the day truly special.

“The surfing was insane, but it’s the community that makes it so heart-warming,” she said.

Several of WA’s top former state and national female surfing stars not only competed, but also judged and commentated. Bailee Hastie, Maddy Cawood, Denver Young and Mel Redman Carr brought history, humour and heart, giving the next generation a glimpse into the legacy of women’s surfing in WA.

Fellow co-founder Chloe Campbell echoed the sentiment, reflecting on the way the event brought people together and celebrated the growing strength of the female surf community.

“This event connected girls from all over the state, from all age groups, building new friendships and bringing the competitive surfing community together,” said Campbell. “Even members of Trigg Point Boardriders came down to support us. It’s a movement that’s really growing.”

She also thanked the many local businesses and partners who helped bring the event to life, including Surfing WA, the City of Stirling, Menace Company, Made For It Wetsuits, Roxy, Hollow Surf, Von Boards, Nueva Australia, Fez Studio, Ceacea Swimwear, Moss the Label, Dumbo Gelato, Alchemy Saunas, Reda and Co, Yallingup Zinc, The Porch Scarborough, Yallingup Beach Surf Shop, Horizon Physio, Snap Plumbing, Creatures of Leisure, Cranky Bones and Scott Print WA.
