SURFHERS: CONNECTING AND INSPIRING GIRL SURFERS

There were plenty of smiles and reasons to cheer at the launch of SurfHers at Trigg Beach last Sunday. The initiative aims to encourage girls and alumni from Trigg Junior Boardriders to hit the waves together and promote inclusiveness in the line-up.

“We’re so excited to bring together like-minded girls who are passionate and enthusiastic about surfing, so that they can catch waves together with confidence,” said Founder of SurfHers and President of Trigg Junior Boardriders, Kim Horwood.

“We’re inspiring a new generation of talented female surfers,” she said. “One where girls feel respected, supported and inspired to push their own limits.”

At the launch of the event, around 40 frothing girls crammed into Surfing WA’s Trigg headquarters to make their own SurfHers tee-shirts, thanks to Menace Company who have thrown their support behind the initiative and are the founding sponsors. The group then headed down to the beach to share the line-up together.

“Despite the tricky onshore conditions, there was such an amazing energy as the girls paddled out collectively and you couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces,” said Kim.

The group aims to catch up regularly to surf and will also meet monthly to participate in workshops such as breathwork, nutrition and yoga, where they can continue to develop their skills out of the water.

“We also have a girls’ surf competition planned for next year, encouraging more girls in the wider community to compete, in a fun and supportive environment,” said Kim. “Watch the space!”
