SURFING WESTERN AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES 2022 EVENTS SCHEDULE

Surfing Western Australia is always looking at ways of improving our event offerings and member experiences, whilst continuing to develop the sport of surfing in WA. In 2022, Surfing WA will be introducing a single, three-day State Championship event for Open Surf Masters, Longboard, Logger, Bodyboard & Stand Up Paddleboarders (SUP).

After a busy and challenging 2021, next year’s calendar is jam-packed with close to 30 State, Specialty, National and International events to be held throughout WA’s major surfing regions.

Surfing WA is strategically focused on revitalising our State Championship Events for Open Surf Masters, Longboard, Logger, Bodyboard & SUP.

We recognise that single / standalone events are now the norm for World Surf League World Title deciders, ISA World Championships and Australian Titles, with most others surfing States hosting a single event to decide their annual surfing champions.

There will be no proposed change to the WA Junior Surfing Titles, as we are satisfied with those events and the current junior development pathway. Junior State Surfing Titles will remain at three, two-day events, with surfers best two results counted towards State Championship results.

We firmly believe this change will allow for far greater and more prestigious events, better media focus, larger presentations and celebrations, a larger competition window to allow for the best conditions, as well as a reduction in event related expenses for competitors and supporters.

This change will also allow for greater opportunity for club run events and activations to be supported by all members and competitors throughout WA.

Surfing WA is also looking to introduce a rotation policy of locations throughout our boardriding codes to guarantee the continuation of iconic event locations for all disciplines.

We’ve also been able to include two backup dates in June, which we can utilised if events have to be postponed for whatever reason (COVID-19, inclement weather, shark detections and event cancellations).

The 2022 competition season will commence in January with the 17th annual Taj’s Small Fries kicking off in Yallingup on the 14th – 16th January.

Cornerstone events include; The World Surf League Margaret River Pro, The Corsaire Aviation King of the Point, The Whalebone Longboard Classic, The WA Pro Surf Series, as well as a suite of other competitions that will cater for West Australian shortboarders, longboarders, bodyboarders and stand up paddleboarders.

Surfing WA is looking forward to visiting many of WA’s iconic surfing regions, with some exciting plans to share surfing’s stoke through regional and metropolitan Western Australia.

“We’re continually looking to improve our events and competitions across all codes, and we’re excited for the year ahead,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “Delivering the best experience for our members, supporting club run events and exposing more people to our wonderful surfing community remains our goal moving forward.”

Online entries for events in the first quarter of 2021 will open via the Surfing WA website in the coming weeks.
