THE FINALE OF THE WOOLWORTHS JUNIOR STATE SURFING TITLES HEADS NORTH TO GERALDTON

Froth levels are building ahead of an all important third and final event of the Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart, with some of Western Australia’s best junior surfers preparing to spend their final weekend of the school holidays competing along the wave-rich Batavia coastline.

Close to 100 grommets aged between 9 and 17 years will converge on the Mid-West from all corners of the State for the final events of the series which will determine who will represent WA at the Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in Queensland later this year.

The Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles act as a nursery for WA talent, with many top surfers learning their craft by competing in these events as groms. The likes of Taj Burrow (Yallingup), Jack Robinson (Margaret River), Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup), Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) and Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown), all excelled in the State Junior Titles in the past and forged a path forward for WA’s new generation of surfing stars.

After starting in Margaret River back in March, then stopping at Trigg Beach in May, the 2022 Woolworths State Junior Surfing Titles will conclude this weekend, with five State Championship Titles still up for grabs in the Under-18 Boys, Under-18 Girls, Under-16 Girls, Under-14 Boys and Under-12 Micro-Groms divisions.

Competition will be fierce as numerous competitors are returning to WA after competing in other top level events recently.

Isi Campbell (Denmark) will be full of confidence after her performance with Team Australia at the the ISA World Junior Surfing Champions in El Salvador. While multiple surfers will be sharp after coming back from competing at the Occy Grom Comp on the Gold Coast and SkullCandy Oz Grom Open in Lennox Heads last week.

After great performances in Margaret River and Trigg, Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), and Olive Hardy (Margaret River) have already captured State Titles in the Under-16 Boys, Under-14 Girls respectively. It will come down to this event to see who will join them as part of the 2022 WA State Junior Surfing Team.

Local surfers who’ll be flying the flag for the mid-west on home turf this weekend include, Jake Hagan, Edel Rodden and Cruz MacDonald, with competitors coming from all of WA’s surfing regions, including, Perth metro, Peel, South-West and Great Southern.

Surfing WA High performance surf coaches will be at the event all weekend providing coaching, mentoring heat preparation, and video analysis for WA’s new generation of surfing stars.

“Geraldton is an ideal surfing destination at this time of year,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “We’re very much looking forward to crowning our remaining State Junior Champions and I’m excited to see how much the kids have sharpened their skills over the school holidays.”
