TRIGG BEACH WA/AUS (Friday 2nd May 2025), Excitement is building ahead of the Think Mental Health WA Trials, with 24 of Western Australia’s best surfers set to battle for the opportunity to compete against the world’s elite at the seventh stop of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Western Australia Margaret River Pro.
Fresh off Margaret River’s own Jack Robinson clinching victory at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, 12 male and 12 female surfers are preparing for a shot at securing their place in the 2025 Margaret River Pro, scheduled to run from 17th to 27th May.
These trials are more than just a competition, they are a true gateway to surfing greatness. Two local heroes, one male and one female, will earn the ultimate opportunity to compete alongside the world’s best, right here at home.
“This event truly sits at the summit of our Pathway to the Pro initiative,” said Surfing WA CEO Mark Lane. “The Trials offer an unrivalled opportunity for WA’s top surfers. From state and national champions to rising stars and seasoned Qualifying Series competitors to break through and stand shoulder to shoulder with the sport’s elite. With the incredible support of Healthway, the WSL, and our passionate local community, we’re proud to foster this incredible pathway for WA’s next generation of surfing stars.”
Fans can expect to see some familiar faces in the waters off Margaret River, including former CT surfer Jacob Willcox (Margaret River), 2025 Challenger Series surfer Willow Hardy (Margaret River), as well as standouts like Jack Thomas (Yallingup) and Mia McCarthy (Margaret River), who will all be vying for their spot into the main event.
“For our surfers, this is the ultimate moment, a chance to make their dreams a reality,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “Every single invitee has carved a unique path to get here, and we can’t wait to see them unleash their best performances at Surfers Point.”
Surfers were selected based on their outstanding performances over the past 12 months, across the WSL World Qualifying Series, state titles, specialty events, and nominations from local boardriders clubs.
The strong and continued partnership between Surfing WA and Healthway has not only elevated competition but also highlighted the vital role of mental wellbeing in sport and everyday life. Together with the World Surf League, Surfing WA remains committed to fostering a healthier, more connected surfing culture across Western Australia.
“We are proud to work with the Surfing WA and the World Surf League to increase awareness and understanding of good mental health and wellbeing in boardrider clubs across WA through the Think Mental Health campaign,” Healthway CEO Colin Smith said. “Proactively addressing mental health and wellbeing is important for fostering well rounded athletes and creates inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and supported,” he continued.
“Maintaining strong mental health and wellbeing enhances focus, resilience and decision-making under pressure, allowing athletes to navigate challenges both in and out of the water.”
