Froth levels are building ahead of the much anticipated opening event of the 2021 Woolworths WA Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart, as close to 100 of Western Australia’s best junior surfers prepare for an action-packed weekend in the wave-rich Margaret River region.
Grommets will converge from all corners of Western Australia for the first of three events which will determine who will represent WA at the Surf Dive ‘n Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in Queensland later this year.
The weekend presents an amazing opportunity to compete at a World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) location, with likes of Jack Robinson (Margaret River) and Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown) providing a pathway and inspiration for many of the event entrants.
“It’s shaping up to be a great weekend of surfing,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “The forecast is coming together nicely, with a building swell and positive winds on the cards. I’m sure all our competitors dream to one day be part of the Championship Tour, and for many this is the start of that journey.”
Local surfers highlight many of the seven divisions on offer this weekend and they’ll be the ones to keep your eyes on if the swell does build.
Solomon Pogue-Englert (Gracetown) captured the Under-18 Boys Australian Title via a new and exciting digital format last year and he’ll be looking to replicate some of that form this weekend with a competition vest on.
Zali Hewson (Margaret River) claimed victory at Taj’s Small Fries back in January and will be one of the highly rated female competitors.
Other locals that will be out to ruffle feathers on their home break include; Ruby Berry (Augusta), Danny Benedetti (Margaret River), Willow Hardy (Margaret River), Macklin Flynn (Cowaramup) , Okie Fraser (Margaret River), George Simpson (Gracetown) and Sid Englert (Gracetown), who will lead the charge against plenty of stiff opposition coming from surfers travelling from the Mid-West, Metro, Peel, and Great Southern.
Surfing WA will be streaming live heat scores and results from the Woolworths WA Junior Surfing Titles so people can to follow the event anywhere on the planet. Be sure to check out www.surfingwalive.com.au
