An exciting mix of youth & experience have highlighted what was a thrilling finale to the 2021 Volte Wetsuits WA Surf Masters Titles presented by SunSmart, with 11 State Champions crowned in wet and wintery waves at Scarborough Beach.
The conditions couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of competitors from across WA who battled the elements, with punchy and powerful 3-4 peaks on offer along the metro coastline. A host of different age divisions hit the water, with competitors coming together from right across WA in hopes to claiming a prestigious State Title and representing WA at the Australian Surf Championships.
Gracetown’s George Simpson proved that he is a star on the rise, claiming two State Championship Titles with an impressive double victory in the Open Men’s and Under-21 Pro Junior divisions. The win backs up Simpson’s State Title in the Under-18 Junior Boys, making it a trifecta of wins in 2021 for the 17 year old.
In the Open Men’s final, Simpson performed with lethal efficiency on his forehand and backhand, posting a combined total of 14.73 (from a possible 20). Simpson had to fend off local hope Pascal Hutchinson (Sorrento), who finished in second ahead of Margaret River’s Will Barrett and Geraldton’s Ethan Barry.
“I’ve just been surfing heaps and really enjoying it,” said Simpson. “The waves have actually been really fun and way better than I expected. I was never my goal to chase the Open Men’s Title, but it feels good to put my names next to some of the legends of surfing in WA.”
Jared Mchale (Willeton) and Luke Hayter (Scarborough) went head-to-head in the Over 35 Masters final, exchanging great waves and good scores, when the siren sounded it was Mchale who came out on top taking the event win. But it was Hayter who took out the State Title on the strength of his round one performance in Margaret River.
“I’m stoked to take out the State Title here at my local beach,” said Hayter. “It’s been a great day of competition and I’m hoping we can get over to Port Macquarie for the Aussie’s.”
Ian Macpherson (City Beach) was another standout performer at Scarborough Beach, claiming a double victory in the Over 40 Men’s and Over 45 Men’s divisions. Macpherson found the waves to his liking and was able to display an amazing repertoire of forehand manoeuvres on his way to a combined total of 15.84 (from a possible 20) and the Over 40’s Men’s Championship Title.
“It’s always nice to surf a competition like you would during a free surf,” said Macpherson. “Competing against your mates in fun waves and being driven to do your best is what makes surfing so special.”
Macpherson saved his best for the Over-45 Men’s final, earning the West Coast Suspensions Wave of the Weekend, for a near perfect 9.33 (from a possible 10), which elevated him to first place ahead of Paul Paterson (City Beach), Paul Dupuy (Albany) and Oscar Pellizzon (North Bech). Despite the win from Macpherson, it was Paul Paterson also from City Beach who took home the Over-45 Men’s State Championship Title.
Albany’s Paul Dupuy was able to backup his Over 50 Men’s win in Margaret River with victory in Scarborough. Dupuy posted a 14.33 two-wave combined total (from a possible 20), to take out the 2021 State Title ahead of close friend Peter Cannon (Abbey Beach) in second, Brad Cowan (Margaret River) in third and Chris Twomey (Karrinyup) in fourth.
“Well done to all the competitors and for Surfing WA running the event in the best waves of the weekend,” said Dupuy. “I’d like to thank my support crew who have been here cheering me on all day long, their energy made a big difference.”
In other results, Samantha Vanderford (Lancelin) claimed the Over-35 and Over-50 Women’s State Title. Frank Gray (Mandurah) took out the Over-60 Men’s final head of eventual State Champion Brent Moss (Esperance). While, Mal Hardy (Gracetown) was the best of the Over-65 Men’s surfers, defending his 2020 State Title with a gutsy win.
Surfing Western Australia Events Manager Justin Majeks heaped praise on the 2021 State Champions and all of the Volte Wetsuits WA Surf Masters Titles competitors for their efforts not only at Scarborough but also in the opening event at Margaret River.
“I congratulate our 2021 State Champions for their commitment and perseverance to our sport, it is a great achievement and they should all be proud of their performances,” said Majeks. “We look forward to working with our State Champions and State Team representatives to be prepare them for the Australian Surf Championships.”
