WA GROMMETS FROTH OUT IN SUMMER SWELLS AT STOP # 7 OF THE WOOLWORTHS SURFER GROMS COMPS

The opening day of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps kicked off in summer style, with small, clean and consistent 1-2 feet waves providing plenty of fun for the close to 90 WA grommets who converged on Perth’s metro beaches to compete.

The seventh stop of a ten event national series, saw Trigg Beach overrun with excited groms, families and supporters, all champing at the bit to take part in this specialty event which caters for Australia’s increasing number of ‘micro-groms’, with boys and girls competing in Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 divisions.

The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps fun and dynamic format provided plenty of opportunity for kids to compete whilst also enjoying themselves in a safe and friendly beach environment. Some of WA’s best junior prospects strutted their stuff as many competitors pulled on a coloured rash-vest for the very first time.

Some of the standouts in the blue ribbon Under-14 Boys division included; State Champion Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), Cruz Sheridan (Margaret River), Okie Fraser (Margaret River) and Jack Lacey (Duncraig), who had to surf multiple times in windswept afternoon conditions to reach the final.

While for the girls, it was Isi Campbell (Denmark), Leila Fraser (Margaret River), Kaleisha Launders (Margaret River), Mia Jacobs (Mandurah), Olive Hardy (Margaret River) and Ruby Berry (Augusta) that dominated the Under-14 division, by reaching tomorrow’s semi-finals.

With so many impressive performances across all divisions that hit the water, it was Amelie Wroth (Mandurah) who stole the show in the Under-8 Micro Groms, compiling the highest two-wave combined total of 18.00 (from a possible 20), which included a near perfect 9.50 (from a possible 20).

Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, 2 days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).

Competition is set to resume tomorrow from 7:15am at Trigg Beach with finals set to hit the water by the early afternoon. Surfing WA will be streaming live scores and results via www.surfingwalive.com
