WA STARS SHINE AT AUSTRALIAN BODYBOARD TITLES

Published on 25/08/2025

Western Australia’s bodyboarders made their mark at the 2025 Australian Bodyboard Titles at URBNSURF Sydney, with Mindarie’s Ebony Schell claiming a record-breaking fourth consecutive national crown, Dunsborough veteran charger Chad Jackson finishing with podium results across two divisions, and WA finishing an impressive third overall.

Schell once again underlined her status as Australia’s premier female bodyboarder, edging out Mariko Menzies (NSW) in a nail-biting Open Women’s final. Her win cements her place in the record books, extending an incredible run of national titles.

“I’m so stoked to take the victory! It was so close and came down to the final moments. All the girls surfed amazingly – what a great way to showcase women’s bodyboarding! Everyone was ripping. Massive shoutout to my parents for their endless support, and to all the girls who made this such a special competition,” said Schell.

Jackson, a World Tour veteran and big-wave slab pioneer, showed he is still a force in the competitive arena, placing 4th in the Open Men’s and runner-up in the Over-35 Masters division.

“It had been a long time since I’d done any national competition, so my main goal was to challenge myself in the pool,” said Jackson. “It’s a big adjustment coming from WA where we don’t have a wave pool yet, but I really enjoyed the format. It felt exciting, like being a kid in a candy store. But one of the extra benefits I got was to see all the young WA crew who I’d never met before, and they blew me away. Their talent, their personalities, everything, I just really enjoyed hanging out with them.”

Surfing WA Chief Operating Officer Matt Wilson praised the athletes’ achievements and the strength of WA’s bodyboarding community.

“Ebony continues to set the benchmark in Australian bodyboarding, and Chad’s results are testament to his longevity and impact on the sport,” said Wilson. “To have WA athletes on the podium across multiple divisions is something we’re extremely proud of, and it speaks to the strength of the bodyboarding community here in the west.”

The event marked the first time an Australian Title has been decided in a wave pool, with flawless conditions at URBNSURF Sydney setting the stage for high-performance bodyboarding.
