The stage is set and the swell is building for Western Australia’s most prestigious and longest-running inter-club surfing showdown. This Saturday, Scarborough Beach will come alive as the Surf Boardroom Surf League presented by Rip Curl celebrates 33 years of surf, pride and pure WA spirit.
With more than five thousand dollars in cash and prizes up for grabs, nine of Western Australia’s top boardrider clubs will battle it out for ultimate bragging rights, showcasing the unrivalled energy and camaraderie that define the WA surf community.
Since 1986, the Surf Boardroom Surf League has been a proving ground for generations of surfers, a place where legends are made, rivalries are born and club pride runs deep. The unique team-based format blends elite competition with mateship, making it one of the most anticipated and fiercely contested events on the Western Australian surf calendar.
Each club nominates six surfers including four Open competitors, one Over-35 Master and one Under-18 Junior, with each surfer’s best wave counting towards a combined team total. The format ensures a nail-biting finish where one ride can make all the difference.
Reigning champions Margaret River Boardriders will be back to defend their crown, fresh from winning the regional qualifying round of the Australian Boardriders Battle at Trigg. But they will face stiff competition from metro powerhouses Trigg Point, Scarborough, Trigg Junior, Mullaloo, City Beach and Cottesloe, as well as regional challengers Yallingup and Albany, who will bring serious heat to Scarborough’s waves.
“It’s such a fun event to be part of and we always look forward to it,” said Margaret River Boardriders Team Captain, Andrew Sheridan. “The team atmosphere is unreal – you definitely see people lift when they’re surfing for their club. We’d love to win again this year and go back-to-back for Margaret River.”
“The Surf League captures everything that makes WA’s surf culture so special,” said Surfing WA Regional Operations Manager, Kim Clift. “It brings every club together, from metro to regional, and the team energy on the beach is electric. You can really feel the pride when surfers are representing their home breaks.”
“It is incredible to see how much the Surf League has grown and how strong the club scene is in WA,” said Matt Bowen, owner of The Surf Boardroom. “This event has been part of WA’s surf culture for more than three decades, and it continues to deliver the excitement and passion every year. We are proud to be involved and cannot wait to see all the clubs throwing down at Scarborough this weekend.”
Adding to the atmosphere, big-wave legend Mark Mathews will join the event as MC, judge and commentator. Recognised as one of the world’s leading big-wave surfers and a globally sought-after keynote speaker, Mathews will also present his inspiring talk “Life Beyond Fear” at the Scarborough Amphitheatre at 2.00pm, free to the public, followed by signings and selfies from 3.00pm.
The Surf Boardroom Surf League is proudly part of the Groundswell Festival, presented by the City of Stirling. Across two days, the festival will transform Scarborough Beach into a celebration of surf, skate and coastal culture, with free community activities, markets, live DJs, wellness workshops, sustainability programs and more. Whether you are surfing, spectating, or soaking up the vibes, Scarborough will be the place to be this weekend.
