WA’S BEST PADDLEBOARDERS SET FOR 2025 STAND UP SURF SHOP WA SUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

Published on 23/07/2025

Some of Western Australia’s finest stand up paddleboarders are waxing up and heading north, with Geraldton set to host the 2025 Stand Up Surf Shop North Freo WA SUP Championships presented by Think Mental Health this weekend.

With State Titles and WA team spots for the Australian SUP Titles on the line, the action is expected to be fierce across a stacked field of divisions, from Open Men’s and Women’s to Over-40s, Over-50s, Over-60s and the popular 9ft+ divisions.

Returning to one of the sport’s favourite venues, the event will once again make the most of Geraldton’s winter charm. The Batavia coastline has become a staple for SUP in WA, having hosted the Australian Titles back in 2016 and continues to deliver ideal waves for competitive paddleboarding.

A moderate 1–3 foot swell is forecast with favourable winds, setting the stage for another memorable day of surfing when competition kicks off at Back Beach on Saturday morning.

Reigning Open Men’s State Champion Peter Tomsett (Greenwood) is set to defend his title but will be up against a strong field including Tim Calder (Exmouth), Ben Mardon (Geraldton), Robert Bullen (North Fremantle), Mike Galvin (North Fremantle) and Peter Campbell (Denmark).

In the Open Women’s division, rising star Isi Campbell (Denmark) returns to Geraldton after capturing the national title in 2024. Isi made headlines in last year’s event with some of the highest scores of the competition in her SUP debut, and will be looking to go back-to-back.

Also returning are seasoned competitors like Chris Twomey (Karrinyup), who claimed both the Over-40 and Over-50 Men’s titles last year, and Jamie Ralston (Bicton), who continues to dominate the Over-60s division.

With eight State Titles up for grabs and multiple positions on the WA Team for the national titles in Phillip Island this October, the stakes could not be higher.

Competition is scheduled to get underway at 8:30am on Saturday at Back Beach, with finals expected to be wrapped up on the same day.
