WEST AUSTRALIAN SURFING ROYALTY CROWNED AT THE 2024 CORSAIRE AVIATION KING OF THE POINT

The 2024 Corsaire Aviation King of the Point presented by City of Stirling, has drawn to a majestic close with some of the finest and most noble of West Australian surfers proving themselves worthy of the crown at Trigg Point.

After three days of testing conditions, the metropolitan beaches, biggest, best and most prestigious surfing event saw valiant champions etch their names into the annals of history and local legend, with daring manoeuvres and elegant wave riding highlighting an exciting final day of competition.

In a triumph for the northern realms, it was Geraldton’s own Jake Hagan who seized the throne, capturing his maiden victory in the King of the Point, besting local hero Luke Campbell in a titanic battle that shall echo through the ages.

Hagan earned his spot into next months Think Mental Health WA Trials, with a dominant performance that saw him post a two-wave combined total of 14.23 (from a possible 20), that included a 7.33 and a 6.90, leaving his rival chasing a 7.90 (from a possible 10), when the siren sounded.

18 year-old Hagan mustered courage and mastery of the conditions to become the first surfer ever to win both the King of the Point and Prince of the Point titles at the same event, marking a truly memorable event for the Mid-West talent.

“I’m so pumped and full of adrenaline right now,” said an ecstatic Hagan. “To win two divisions and earn my place into the Trials is like a dream come true. I look forward to giving it my best.”

Yallingup’s Claire Bevilacqua proved her prowess once again, capturing her fifth Queen of the Point title in a closely fought battle over Cowaramup’s Mia McCarthy. The former World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour competitor showed her experience and class edging out McCarthy by less than half a point, finishing on a two wave total of 11.83 (from a possible 20).

“I love this contest and I’m so happy to still be a part of it,” said Bevilacqua. “Mia is such a great competitor and she brought out the best of my surfing today. The Trials is always pretty scary, it’s usually pretty big and a full on day, but I love the test and I love pushing myself, it’s always an adventure to say the least at Margaret River.”

Trigg’s own Mitch Loan stood resolute, capturing the Over-40 Lord of the Point title with unyielding resolve and superior wave selection. Loan was awarded the West Coast Suspensions Wave of the Weekend for an excellent 8.67 (from a possible 10), on his way to victory over Luke Hayter (Scarborough), Luke Wyllie (North Fremantle), and Brian Jovic (Quinns Rock).

“It was nice that the swell came up for finals day,” said Loan. “Thanks to Luke Wyllie and Corsaire for supporting this event and for everyone that put in the work to get this event over the line, it’s a huge effort and I couldn’t be happier.”

Darren Harwood (Scarborough), created his own slice of event history becoming the first event Over-50 Duke of the Point winner. Harwood used his big and powerful frame to throw huge fans of spray on his way to the win ahead of Russ Bird (Sorrento), Mark Clift (Hillarys) and Steve Crew (Greenwood).

“I haven’t competed in King of the Point for about eight years and I was stoked to see the older guys getting a crack at surfing the point and being part of this amazing event,” said Harwood. “It was nice to have a few more waves today and thanks to everyone for a great time.”

Olive Hardy (Margaret River), proved her star is well and truly on this rise with a near flawless performance in the Under-21 Princess of the Point division. Drawing from her strong surfing pedigree, Hardy amassed an huge two-wave total of 16.10 (from a possible 20) that included an 8.60 and 7.50.

“This win means a lot to me, all the girls were ripping and I’m really happy with my performance,” said Hardy. “I’d like to thank my mum for her coaching, all the girls and Surfing WA for another amazing event.”

Jake Scott (Swanbourne) ascended to claim the title as the Under-16 Jester of the Point, with his victory heralding a new era of surfing majesty in Western Australia. Scott proved too strong for rising stars Ace Flynn (Cowaramup), Ethan Anderson (Cowaramup) and Charlie Harris (Swanbourne), posting a combined total of 12.60 (from a possible 20).

As the wave of excitement subside and the echoes of triumph fade into the ether, Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks heralded the success of yet another chapter in the illustrious Corsaire Aviation King of the Point.

“Despite the challenging surf, this year’s King of the Point will be one to remember for a very long time,” he said. “This was the first time the event has run over three-days and the first time we’ve seen the Duke of the Point division included. I’d like to congratulate all our winners and everyone for their support of surfing along the metro beaches.”

Though the seas may be tempestuous, and the winds may howl, the spirit of surf royalty shall endure, carrying forth the legacy of this hallowed tournament for generations to come.
