CHAMPIONS CROWNED AS WA’S BEST YOUNG SURFERS SHINE BRIGHT ALONG THE METRO BEACHES

TRIGG BEACH, WA/AUS (Monday 9th June 2025), Western Australia’s next generation of surfing stars lit up Trigg Beach across three picture-perfect days, with clean offshore winds and fun winter swells providing the ultimate canvas for the second event of the 2025 WA Junior Surfing Titles presented by Think Mental Health.

100 of the state’s best young surfers competed across eight divisions, with the stakes high as four new state champions were crowned and valuable rankings points tallied ahead of the third and final event of the series in Geraldton in July.

“The conditions really turned it on for us this weekend,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “From sun-up to sundown, the level of surfing, the energy on the beach, and the support for our competitors was amazing. You couldn’t ask for a better winter weekend in WA.”

Among the event standouts were Olive Hardy (Margaret River), Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), Poppy Redman Carr (Dunsborough), Ethan Anderson (Cowaramup), Ily Fraser (Margaret River), Ollie Holmes (Dunsborough), Luna Thomas (Margaret River), and Kyuss Rimmer (Trigg), who all rose to the occasion to claim victories in their respective divisions.

Olive Hardy, the reigning Under-16 Girls national champion, locked in the Under-18 Girls state title, showcasing her trademark power and precision. Hardy drew from her strong surfing pedigree on her way to victory on the strength of a combined total of 13.50 (from a possible 20).

“I’m over the moon to take out the win and wrap up the state title here at Trigg,” said Hardy. “All the girls were ripping and although the Under-18 Girls is one of the smaller divisions, the girls pushed me all the way.”

A commanding performance from Maverick Wilson saw him power through the event and claim victory in the hotly contested Under-18 Boys division. Wilson dropped some of the highest scores of the competition and looked to click into another gear during the final. Wilson flowed on every wave and displayed his flair, locking in a two-wave total of 15.94 (from a possible 20).

“I felt really good through the event and the waves have been really fun for Perth,” said Wilson. “Trigg can be tricky, but I managed to find a few corners and lay it down when it counted. This is my last year in the juniors and I’m already looking forward to Geraldton to hopefully capture the state title after missing out in 2024.”

Poppy Redman Carr, delivered a breakout performance at Trigg, capturing her maiden state title event win with an emphatic display in the Under-16 Girls division. The daughter of former World No. 2 Melanie Redman Carr, Poppy showcased world-class skill and composure on her path to victory, proving that surfing talent runs deep in the family.

“This is my first state title win, I’ve come second and third at events in the past,” said Redman Carr. “Today reminded me of Smith’s Beach and it’s been a really fun event and well done to all the girls in the final.”

Ethan Anderson, stamped his authority on the Under-16 Boys final with explosive surfing highlighting his performance. Anderson posted a two-wave total of 12.77, to edge out Geraldton’s Cruz Macdonald, by just 0.10 when the siren sounded in a truely closely contested final.

“I’m so happy right now and the boys pushed me all the way,” said Anderson. “I learnt so much at last year’s national titles and I can’t wait to get back there.”

Ily Fraser, continued her dream run in 2025 with another strong performance, claiming her second straight victory in Trigg, backing up her win in Margaret River earlier this year. Fraser was too strong for her competitors posting a combined total of 13.67 (from a possible 20).

“I’m so happy to win again and defend my state championship,” said Fraser. “My brother Okie is my inspiration and I hope I can go one better at this year’s national title after finishing second in Wollongong in 2024.”

Ollie Holmes, handled the pressure with poise to take the win in the Under-14 Boys final. Holmes sliced and diced everything that came his way, posting a combined total of 13.20 (from a possible 20).

“I just love competing and I’m pumped to get the win,” said Holmes. “ I can’t wait for the final event up in Geraldton and thanks to my dad and all the guys in the final.”

Luna Thomas, surfed with a confidence beyond her years to claim her first state championship in the Under-12 Girls division. At just 11 years of age, Thomas’ future looks bright and she hopes to one day be a professional surfer.

“I just love surfing and coming off the back of the Margaret River Pro, I’m really motivated to push myself,” said Thomas. “I’m going over to the Gold Coast at the end of the month and this win really helps me get ready to compete against some of the best girls in the country.”

Local talent Kyuss Rimmer, was a popular winner of the Under-12 Boys division. At just 9 years of age Rimmer showed flow and flair on every wave, navigating every section with style, dropping two seven point rides and posting an impressive 14.94 total.

“I surf Trigg every day and the waves we scored this weekend were epic,” said Rimmer. “I want to thank everyone for a great event and my parents and sponsors for all their support.”

With just one stop remaining in this year’s series, attention now turns north to Geraldton, where the final round will decide the remaining state champions and finalise WA’s elite junior team the 2025 Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in South Australia this November.

“Congratulations to all of our winners and a huge thanks to the surfers, parents, judges, and supporters who made this event so special,” added Majeks. “We can’t wait to wrap up the series in Geraldton, it’s going to be a cracking finish.”
